Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

Primary focus will be Endoscopy with knowledge of endoscopy procedures, scope cleaning and processing of endoscopes.

Under the direction of the Director of Surgical Services, or designee, ensures the proper care, cleaning, sterilization, and maintenance for all new and reusable medical instruments, supplies daily surgical procedures within Surgical Services. Position requires a working knowledge of principles and practices of aseptic technique, knowledge of equipment, instruments, procedures, and supplies used in the operating room, and knowledge of decontamination, cleaning, and sterilization of all types of medical instruments. Provide integrity and sterility of products and services for outlying customers such as OB, the ER, and the clinics.

PRINCIPLE FUNCTIONS include the following, other duties may be assigned:

  1. Quality Assurance:

Monitors all departmental biological tests, chemical tests and Bowie Dick Tests with regards to sterile processing as directed. Properly runs designated biological and chemical tests at the beginning of each assigned day shift, and accurately and completely records results in appropriate log, ensuring that manager is promptly notified when values are outside of normal limits. Routinely reviews system reports to identify usage patterns, to spot errors/problems, and to perform other analyses in an attempt to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the system and related materials management procedures.

  1. Tech Duties:

Gathers contaminated items from designated locations throughout the shift. Removes damaged items from use, and sends to appropriate location for repair. Properly loads and operates washer, or pre-washes contaminated items by hand, as appropriate, in preparation for sterilization. Properly wraps or packages items for sterilization. Properly unloads and stores sterilized items for distribution. Properly handles and cares for items during processing, so that no damage or injuries occur. Ensures that all required items for designated tray are included, and properly wrapped or packaged, in accordance with procedure and time frames. Ensures that all supplies included on trays have not passed their expiration dates. Accomplishes general cleaning of departmental surface areas, racks, shelves, storage cabinets and storage areas, in accordance with standards for cleanliness, as assigned. Stores all supplies and equipment in the proper location, and keeps the department’s dispensing shelves stocked, on an on-going basis.

  1. Equipment:

Performs preventive maintenance procedures and control procedures on electrical heating and cooling units in accordance with procedure and time frames. Promptly generates repair order or request using computer, for any unit found inoperable. Thoroughly inspects steam sterilizers for visible signs of malfunction and reports any observed problems, or potential problems.

  1. Supplies:

Places orders for inventory items when inventory control report indicates that levels have reached established “reorder” points, daily. Accurately and completely annotates purchase order as to supplies received when receiving copy is delivered. Effectively investigates and resolves problems associated with back-orders, errors, miscommunications, lost shipments, price discrepancies and invoice discrepancies, without appreciable assistance.

As necessary, makes whatever arrangements possible to obtain needed items in emergency situations, to include changing order to acceptable substitute, switching vendors, or borrowing item from vendor or other source, in accordance with accepted practice or procedure. Issues proper credit memos where indicated and notifies Accounting department on a timely basis. Routinely monitors inventory levels and usage patterns based on historical and projected usage, and revises “par levels” if needed. Contacts suppliers and obtains authorization to return or exchange products received in error, as warranted. Oversees the receipt and distribution of requisitioned surgical supplies and equipment.

JOB KNOWLEDGE & QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • Highest level of education completed, minimum high school diploma or equivalent required.

Training and Experience

  • Minimum of one to three (1-3) years experience of instrument tech or similar experience in sterile processing and/or operating room in an acute care hospital preferred.
  • Recent instrument and/or/surgical technology in an acute care hospital or transferable experience.
  • Knowledge and experience in handling surgical equipment, supplies and instruments as demonstrated by direct observation and/or interview practical.
  • Demonstrated ability to use Office software for documents and reports.
  • Must be self-directed and able to respond to emergency situations in a calm, competent, consistent manner. Demonstrated oral and written communication skills, accuracy with numbers and attention to detail.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Central Processing Certification required or to be obtained within 2 years.
    • National certification from the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD)* or from International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materiel Management (IAHCSMM)* as a Certified Registered Central Sterile Technician (CRCST) or Certified Instrument Specialist (CIS).
