Job Summary: Under the general supervision of the Fire Captain, the Firefighter performs firefighting, rescue, and emergency medical duties as required to protect the lives and property of the city residents. This position is also responsible for maintaining the fire equipment and facilities.
Education/Training/Experience Requirements:
1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Active Basic Firefighter certification from the Texas Commission on Fire Protection.
3. NIMS 100 and 700 course completion certificates within the 1st year of employment.
4. Class “B” Texas Driver’s License within the 1st year of employment.
Essential Job Functions:
1. Trains in the skills and techniques of firefighting and routine care and maintenance of firefighting equipment, apparatus and fire department grounds. Close supervision in task performance is provided, and employees are not expected to show independent judgment.
2. Deploys and advances fire attack lines.
3. Performs salvage work to conserve property.
4. Administers first aid to injured persons.
5. Participates in fire drills and fire training classes.
6. Inspects building for pre-fire planning.
7. Perform fire inspections.
8. Participate in fire hydrant maintenance.
9. Carries, sets, and climbs ladders.
10. Communicates via two-way radio.
11. Drives and operates fire department vehicles, including pumpers and other major apparatus.
12. Performs overhaul work after fires.
13. Performs routine maintenance and cleaning of departmental equipment, apparatus, and facilities.
14. Perform rescue operations.
15. Performs other related work as required.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
1. Knowledge of principles, practices and methods of fire suppression and rescue.
2. Knowledge of the location of streets and roads in the city and county as well as fire hydrant locations.
3. Skills to perform manual labor required to suppress fires and carry out rescues.
4. Ability to drive and operate fire trucks and equipment.
5. Ability to speak, read and understand the English language.
6. Ability to read, interpret and carry out firefighting instructions.
7. Ability to use rescue and hand tools during emergency incidents.
8. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees.
9. Ability to exhibit emotional stability and courage to perform hazardous duties under stress.
10. Ability to learn and utilize department fire software and mobile applications as required.
Physical Demands/Work Environment: Requires strenuous exertion under such conditions as fire, heat, smoke, extremes in weather, confined spaces, heights, loud noises, and other hazardous situations. Firefighting and rescue work are the most difficult and responsible areas of work requiring physical activity over prolonged periods of time involving standing, walking, attacking a fire, operating rescue tools and kneeling and stooping in awkward positions. Personnel in this position must be able to lift and/or move objects weighing at least 100 pounds.
