Assistant Teaching Professor - Adventure Studies in Kamloops, British Columbia at Thompson Rivers University

Position Overview

The Adventure Studies Department invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Teaching Professor with a primary focus on the Mountain, Rock, and Ski Programs.

This position is intended for a highly experienced mountain professional with established credentials in guiding, avalanche safety, and expedition leadership, who is also committed to excellence in post-secondary teaching.

The successful applicant will contribute to a comprehensive adventure studies program delivering integrated classroom and field-based education in complex, dynamic environments.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and instruct field courses in mountaineering, ski touring, and rock climbing
• Teach a minimum of 2 upper and/or lower-level classroom courses per year such as expedition planning, adventure activities, adventure tourism industry, guiding leadership, and/or adventure operations
• Design curriculum aligned with TRU guidelines and industry standards
• Coordinate logistics, staffing, and risk management for field-based courses
• Oversee risk management for field-based courses
• Direct and indirect supervision of Assistant ACMG Guides in compliance with ACMG scope of practice
• Mentor and advise students pursuing careers in the mountain industry, supporting their technical development, professional judgment, leadership capacity, and industry readiness
• Promote the university and Adventure Studies Department programs
• Support departmental and institutional service, operations, duties, and program development
• Follow TRU Adventure Studies Risk Management guidelines and protocols

Required Qualifications

• IFMGA/UIAGM Full Mountain Guide certification (required)
• Canadian Avalanche Association Qualified Avalanche Professional (required)
• Master's degree in a relevant or related subject; consideration may be given to candidates who are currently in a master's program and will complete their degree by the appointment date or shortly thereafter
• A minimum of 10 years professional guiding and instructional experience in complex mountain terrain, with demonstrated expertise in backcountry ski, mountain and rock guiding
• Demonstrated past teaching experience – (recommended post-secondary teaching experience)
• Advanced Wilderness First Aid (or higher)
• Class 2 or 4 driver’s license

Additional Assets

• AST Instructor and/or CAA Industry Training Program instructional experience
• Experience incorporating Indigenous perspectives, decolonizing approaches, and inclusive practices into curriculum and field-based education
• Curriculum or program development experience

Compensation and Benefits
Salary range: $73,666 – $114,124 (TRUFA Collective Agreement).
Includes Professional Development Allowance, Defined Benefit Pension Plan, and full extended health and dental benefits.
