About the Role:

The Registered Nurse (RN) in Surgical Services plays a critical role in delivering high-quality perioperative care to patients undergoing surgical procedures. This position involves comprehensive patient assessment, preparation, and monitoring before, during, and after surgery to ensure optimal outcomes and patient safety. The RN collaborates closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate care and respond promptly to any changes in patient condition. Additionally, the role requires adherence to strict sterile techniques and surgical protocols to minimize infection risks and promote healing. Ultimately, the RN in Surgical Services contributes significantly to the efficiency and effectiveness of the surgical team, enhancing patient experiences and recovery trajectories.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Current and valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in the United States.
  • Completion of an accredited nursing program (Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Nursing).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Experience or clinical exposure in surgical or perioperative nursing settings.
  • Strong understanding of sterile techniques and infection control protocols.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certified Perioperative Nurse (CNOR) credential.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) are preferred at the time of hire and must be obtained within one year of hire.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree.
  • Experience with electronic health records (EHR) systems specific to surgical services.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in fast-paced, high-pressure environments.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct preoperative assessments including reviewing patient history, vital signs, and laboratory results to prepare patients for surgery.
  • Assist in the operating room by preparing surgical instruments, maintaining sterile fields, and supporting the surgical team during procedures.
  • Monitor patients’ vital signs and overall condition intraoperatively and postoperatively, promptly identifying and addressing any complications.
  • Provide postoperative care including pain management, wound care, patient education, and coordination of discharge planning.
  • Document all nursing care activities accurately and communicate effectively with multidisciplinary teams to ensure continuity of care.

Skills:

The RN in Surgical Services utilizes clinical assessment skills daily to evaluate patient readiness and respond to dynamic changes during surgery. Effective communication skills are essential for coordinating with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other team members to ensure seamless patient care. Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities are applied continuously to anticipate potential complications and implement timely interventions.
