Position Summary

The Body Shop Technician Apprentice assists experienced collision repair technicians while learning industry-standard vehicle repair and refinishing techniques. This entry-level position provides hands-on training in collision repair, vehicle preparation, welding, panel replacement, refinishing, and shop operations. The apprentice develops technical skills through on-the-job training while supporting the body shop team in delivering high-quality repairs and exceptional guest service.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist body shop technicians with vehicle disassembly and reassembly.
  • Perform sanding, masking, grinding, cleaning, and repair preparation tasks.
  • Learn proper techniques for dent repair, panel replacement, and structural repairs.
  • Assist with welding and metal fabrication under supervision.
  • Support refinishing operations by preparing vehicles for paint.
  • Safely move vehicles within the dealership and body shop areas.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of work areas, tools, and equipment.
  • Assist with parts inventory, materials preparation, and shop supplies.
  • Follow all dealership safety procedures, OSHA regulations, and manufacturer guidelines.
  • Learn proper use of hand tools, power tools, repair equipment, and measuring systems.
  • Attend manufacturer, dealership, and vocational training programs as assigned.
  • Report equipment issues, safety concerns, or repair discrepancies to management.
  • Maintain professional conduct and a positive attitude while learning new skills.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by management.
Requirements:

Qualifications

  • Strong interest in automotive collision repair and refinishing.
  • Ability to learn and follow repair procedures and instructions.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and quality workmanship.
  • Dependable attendance and positive work ethic.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
  • Commitment to workplace safety.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record preferred.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Enrollment in or completion of an automotive collision repair program preferred.
  • Previous experience in automotive detailing, maintenance, or shop environments is beneficial but not required.
  • Willingness to participate in ongoing technical training and development.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and lifting.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work with hand and power tools.
  • Manual dexterity required to perform repair-related tasks.
  • Ability to work in varying temperatures and shop conditions.

Work Environment

  • Fast-paced collision repair facility.
  • Exposure to vehicle fumes, paint materials, dust, noise, and repair equipment.
  • Frequent movement throughout the shop and repair areas.
  • Occasional overtime may be required based on business needs.
