Position Summary
The Automotive Master Technician is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining guest and dealership vehicles at the highest level of technical proficiency. This position serves as a subject matter expert within the service department, providing advanced diagnostic support, assisting other technicians with complex repairs, and ensuring all work is performed in accordance with manufacturer specifications and dealership quality standards. The Master Technician plays a key role in delivering safe, reliable vehicles while supporting overall shop efficiency and guest satisfaction.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Diagnose and repair complex mechanical, electrical, drivability, HVAC, suspension, steering, and brake system concerns.
- Perform advanced troubleshooting using manufacturer diagnostic equipment and technical resources.
- Complete maintenance and repair services efficiently and accurately in accordance with manufacturer standards.
- Document all diagnostic findings, repair procedures, and recommendations on repair orders.
- Assist Service Advisors in explaining repair needs and technical recommendations when necessary.
- Provide technical guidance and mentoring to apprentice, lube, and service technicians.
- Stay current on manufacturer technical service bulletins, recalls, and repair procedures.
- Perform warranty repairs in compliance with manufacturer requirements.
- Conduct thorough vehicle inspections and identify necessary maintenance or repair needs.
- Ensure all repairs meet dealership quality standards before vehicle release.
- Maintain tools, equipment, and work area in a clean and organized condition.
- Follow all OSHA, environmental, and dealership safety policies and procedures.
- Participate in ongoing manufacturer training and certification programs.
- Assist Shop Foreman and Service Management with technical problem-solving and quality control initiatives.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Expert-level automotive diagnostic and repair skills.
- Advanced knowledge of automotive mechanical, electrical, and computerized vehicle systems.
- Strong troubleshooting and critical-thinking abilities.
- Ability to interpret technical manuals, repair procedures, and wiring diagrams.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced dealership environment.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
- Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record required.
- ASE Master Technician Certification strongly preferred.
- Manufacturer Master Certification preferred.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Completion of an Automotive Technology program preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of professional automotive repair experience required.
- ASE Master Technician Certification preferred.
- Manufacturer-specific advanced certifications highly preferred.
- Previous dealership experience preferred.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, bend, kneel, and work in physically demanding positions for extended periods.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly.
- Frequent use of hand tools, diagnostic equipment, and power tools.
- Ability to work in varying temperatures and shop conditions.
- Manual dexterity required for precision mechanical work.
Work Environment
Work is performed in an automotive service shop with exposure to vehicle noise, exhaust fumes, chemicals, and moving equipment in a fast-paced environment.
