Certified Medical Assisting Program

16-Week Certified Medical Assisting Training Program

The Certified Medical Assisting Program is a comprehensive 16-week training program designed to prepare individuals for entry-level employment as medical assistants in physician offices, clinics, outpatient healthcare settings, and other ambulatory care environments.

The program combines classroom instruction, hands-on skills training, and a supervised clinical externship to provide students with the knowledge and practical experience needed to begin a career in medical assisting.

Program Eligibility

To be considered for participation in the Certified Medical Assisting Program, applicants must meet the following requirement:

  • Applicants must be eligible for hire or rehire with MHP. Employment eligibility will be reviewed as part of the program selection process. Meeting the program eligibility requirements does not guarantee employment with MHP following successful completion of the program.
  • Include a resume with your application.
  • Include a 200-word essay. Choice of topics: Why do you want to become a medical assistant? Or, why do you want to work in a healthcare profession? This essay should be uploaded as a Cover Letter when submitting your application.

Program Schedule

  • Program Length: 16 weeks
  • Classroom/Lab Instruction: 3 hours per evening, 3 evenings per week
  • Clinical Externship: 160 hours
  • Total Classroom/Lab Hours: 144 hours
  • Total Program Hours: 304 hours

Attendance Requirement

Regular attendance and participation are essential to successfully completing the program. Students are required to maintain a minimum 90% attendance rate throughout the classroom portion of the program in order to successfully pass the course.

Because the program includes hands-on clinical skills and competency-based instruction, consistent attendance is necessary to ensure students receive the required instruction and opportunities to demonstrate proficiency. Students who do not meet the 90% attendance requirement may be unable to successfully complete the classroom portion of the program.

Students will receive instruction and hands-on training in the fundamental areas of medical assisting, including:

  • Vital signs and patient measurements
  • Patient intake and medical history
  • Infection prevention and standard precautions
  • Patient preparation and positioning
  • Basic pharmacology and medication administration
  • Injections and immunizations
  • Phlebotomy and specimen collection
  • Urinalysis and other basic laboratory procedures
  • EKG procedures
  • Wound care and basic clinical procedures
  • Emergency procedures and patient safety

Administrative Skills

  • Medical terminology
  • Appointment scheduling and patient registration
  • Electronic health records
  • Medical documentation and chart management
  • Insurance and basic billing concepts

NHA Certified Clinical Medical Assistant Examination

Upon successful completion of the classroom and laboratory portion of the program, students will sit for the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) examination.

The examination provides students with the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in medical assisting and pursue nationally recognized certification as a Certified Clinical Medical Assistant.

Students must meet all applicable eligibility and examination requirements established by the NHA.

Clinical Externship

Following completion of the classroom and laboratory portion of the program, students will complete a 160-hour supervised clinical externship in an ambulatory healthcare setting.

The externship provides students with the opportunity to apply classroom knowledge in a real-world clinical environment while working alongside experienced healthcare professionals. Students will participate in daily clinical operations and demonstrate competency in appropriate medical assisting skills under supervision.

Externship experiences may include:

  • Patient intake and rooming
  • Vital signs
  • Patient communication and education
  • EHR documentation
  • Phlebotomy and specimen collection
  • EKGs
  • Injections and medication administration
  • Clinical procedures

Program Completion

To successfully complete the program, students must:

  • Maintain a minimum 90% attendance rate during the classroom portion of the program.
  • Successfully complete required classroom and laboratory coursework.
  • Demonstrate competency in required medical assisting skills.
  • Successfully complete the 160-hour clinical externship.
  • Meet all program-specific academic and clinical requirements.

Program Goal

The goal of the Certified Medical Assisting Program is to create a structured pathway for individuals to enter the healthcare workforce while developing the clinical, administrative, and professional skills necessary to contribute effectively to a medical practice.

The program emphasizes hands-on learning, real-world clinical experience, professionalism, patient safety, and quality patient care, while providing students with a pathway toward nationally recognized medical assisting certification.
