Railcar Mechanic
Locations: Fort Worth, TX | Candor, NC | Richmond, VA
Job Type: Full-Time | Direct Hire
Starting Salary: $46,800/year, with higher salary available depending on experience
We are hiring a Railcar Mechanic to repair, maintain, fabricate, and weld freight railcars. This hands-on position requires strong mechanical and welding skills, attention to safety, and the ability to work effectively in changing field conditions.
The position supports railroad emergency operations and requires 24/7 on-call availability, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
What You'll Do- Repair and maintain freight railcars and related components.
- Perform welding and metal fabrication as needed for railcar repairs.
- Inspect vehicles, tools, equipment, and materials before and after assignments.
- Review work plans and participate in job and safety briefings.
- Complete repair and job-related documentation accurately.
- Work closely with team members to complete assignments safely and efficiently.
- Maintain organized, clean, and properly stocked vehicles, equipment, and work areas.
- Communicate professionally with coworkers and customers.
- Follow company procedures, railroad safety requirements, and applicable regulations.
- Support other job duties as needed based on operational requirements.
- AWS welding certification required.
- Welding and fabrication experience with the ability to perform hands-on repair work.
- Working knowledge of freight car components.
- Familiarity with the AAR Field Manual.
- Knowledge of railroad safety requirements, including Blue Flag Law and FRA standards.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
- Valid driver's license.
- Ability to follow safety procedures and maintain a professional work ethic.
- Ability to obtain and maintain required railroad and safety certifications, including:
- CPR
- First Aid
- E-Rail Safe
- CSX On-Track Safety
- 24/7 emergency response and on-call position.
- Availability required for nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Frequent travel and changing job assignments.
- Outdoor work in all weather conditions.
- Physically demanding work involving standing, walking on uneven surfaces, bending, lifting, and carrying.
- Ability to regularly lift up to 50 lbs.; heavier materials require assistance.
- Extended hours may be necessary depending on emergency and operational needs.
