Senior Finance Manager State & Local Taxes

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Finance Manager – State & Local Taxes based in Canada.

This is a senior tax leadership opportunity focused on managing U.S. state and local tax (SALT) compliance, planning, and risk across a complex, multi-jurisdictional business.
You will serve as a strategic advisor to Finance, Legal, and business leaders, helping optimize the organization’s tax position while maintaining strong compliance.
The role combines technical tax expertise with business partnership, covering income and franchise taxes, sales and use taxes, gross receipts, property taxes, and related matters.
You will lead tax planning initiatives, nexus and apportionment analyses, audits, legislative monitoring, and tax process improvements.
The position offers significant autonomy in a remote environment while providing visibility with senior finance leadership and cross-functional stakeholders.
You will also have the opportunity to introduce automation and technology solutions that improve the efficiency, accuracy, and scalability of tax operations.
Success in this role requires strong U.S. SALT expertise, sound judgment, analytical rigor, and the ability to translate complex tax matters into practical business recommendations.

Accountabilities
  • SALT compliance: Lead and oversee the preparation, review, and timely filing of U.S. state and local income/franchise, sales and use, gross receipts, property, and other applicable tax returns.
  • Compliance management: Maintain the multistate tax compliance calendar, ensuring accurate filings and adherence to deadlines across all relevant jurisdictions.
  • Tax planning: Develop and implement state and local tax strategies designed to optimize the overall tax position, including nexus studies, apportionment analyses, credits, and incentive opportunities.
  • Nexus and taxability: Oversee nexus determinations and taxability assessments related to new products, services, geographic expansion, and evolving business activities.
  • Audit management: Manage state and local tax audits, coordinate responses to information requests, work with advisors and authorities, and support the resolution of disputes.
  • Legislative monitoring: Track state and local tax legislation, regulations, and administrative developments, assess their potential impact, and communicate relevant implications to senior leadership.
  • Business partnership: Collaborate with Finance, Legal, and business units on new initiatives, acquisitions, restructurings, and other strategic transactions to identify and address SALT considerations proactively.
  • Risk management: Prepare and communicate SALT risk assessments, forecasts, technical analyses, and memoranda to support informed business decisions.
  • Process improvement: Identify opportunities to streamline, automate, and improve SALT compliance, reporting, data management, and tax processes.
  • Technology enablement: Evaluate and leverage tax technology, compliance software, ERP systems, and other tools to improve efficiency, accuracy, and scalability.
  • External relationships: Manage relationships with external tax advisors, consultants, and outside counsel, ensuring high-quality support and effective coordination.
  • Strategic leadership: Serve as a trusted internal resource on U.S. state and local tax matters and provide clear, practical recommendations to Finance and other senior stakeholders.
Requirements
  • Education and credentials: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline; CPA, CMI, or MST certification/qualification is required.
  • Professional experience: At least 5 years of progressive experience in U.S. State and Local Tax, including significant U.S. Sales & Use Tax experience.
  • Public accounting background: Minimum 3–5 years of experience working within a public accounting SALT practice is required.
  • Technical expertise: Strong knowledge of multistate income and franchise taxation, sales and use tax, nexus, apportionment, compliance, taxability, and SALT planning.
  • Audit experience: Demonstrated experience managing state tax audits, responding to information requests, and supporting the resolution of tax disputes.
  • Analytical capability: Strong research, analytical, problem-solving, and technical tax skills, with the ability to evaluate complex issues and develop practical recommendations.
  • Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex tax concepts clearly to finance leaders and non-tax stakeholders.
  • Technology proficiency: Experience with tax compliance software and ERP platforms such as OneSource, CorpTax, SAP, Avalara, or comparable systems.
  • Strategic mindset: Ability to identify tax risks and planning opportunities while understanding their broader financial and operational implications.
  • Collaboration: Comfortable partnering with Finance, Legal, business units, external advisors, and other stakeholders across distributed teams.
  • Autonomy: Ability to manage priorities independently and deliver high-quality work in a remote environment.
  • Professional judgment: Strong attention to detail, discretion, accountability, and the ability to make sound decisions in a complex regulatory environment.
