About This Position

he Senior Parks Specialist position extends to maintenance, operation and servicing of City parks as part of a team. This position is an excellent opportunity for a motivated individual with knowledge of general parks landscape, turf, facilities and irrigation maintenance to serve in a passionate, innovative community. This position is represented by the Lake Oswego Municipal Employees' Association.

Employees in this class are responsible for the application of considerable knowledge in or mastery of an assigned area, and provide technical expertise or guidance to other parks specialist and staff.

The Department: The Parks Division of the Parks and Recreation Department manages the land and physical facilities of the parks system. The 650+ acres of City-owned land includes: developed park sites, playgrounds, natural areas, special facility areas, 14 acres of athletic fields that include synthetic and natural turf grass as well as baseball and softball and a golf course. Ongoing tasks vary from landscape bed maintenance, mowing, irrigation repair, restroom maintenance, facility cleaning and repair, and equipment operation. This division also supports and sets up many community events such as the Farmers Market, summer concerts, Festival of the Arts, park dedication and tree lighting ceremonies, and many more.


  • General knowledge of contract administration and implementation.
  • Project lead from inception to completion.
  • Responds to complaints from the public, referring to other City staff as necessary.
  • Monitors and reports on employee safety practices in the field.
  • Provide high level of landscape, facility and turf care of our parks.
  • Clean and service park facilities. This includes but is not limited to: trash and litter clean-up, restroom cleaning, repair or replacement of park amenities (benches, fencing, fountains), and event preparation of city facilities and natural areas.
  • Additional specialty projects and related duties of a similar scope and nature as assigned.
  • Carry out all assigned work in a safe and responsible manner; comply with safety requirements and regulations; identify and abstain from participating in unsafe work environments. Read and review safety material, training documentation, SDS, instructional materials, and traffic signs
  • Make labor and material estimates for repairs; order equipment and supplies.
  • Respond to emergency requests during and after work hours.
  • Perform related duties as assigned including full range of Parks Specialist duties.
  • Must be able to perform and have basic knowledge of the principles and practices of irrigation repair, maintenance, troubleshooting, construction and installation used in parks systems.
  • The ideal candidate must also be able to read and understand maps, plans, drawings, orders and/or other documents as required.

A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform this position is with a High School diploma or G.E.D; and three years of experience in general landscape, maintenance, construction work or related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.

Positions in this classification require the ability to possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and ability to meet the City’s driving standards. May also be required to obtain a CDL.

Positions in this classification will be required to obtain a Public Pesticide Applicators License within the first 6 months of the date of employment.
