Site Description
New Beginnings Youth Development Center (NB) is the District of Columbia’s long-term detention center for male and female youth located in Laurel, MD. It is responsible for the care and custody of youth placed in secure detention by court order.
Position Overview
The Building Substitute Teacher is responsible for providing classroom coverage for any teacher who is absent for a specified period. The Building Substitute Teacher works the regular hours of the absent classroom teacher during his/her absence. When there is full coverage, the Building Substitute Teacher serves as a support staff member according to the school schedule by supporting students and teachers in the classroom.
Responsibilities
Specific responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:
- Reviews and implements lesson plans provided by the absent teacher or Assistant Principal
- Teaches content and skills in the subject area utilizing the curriculum designated by Maya Angelou Academy and other appropriate learning activities.
- Supports students and teachers academically during classroom activities.
- Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior necessary to provide an orderly and productive classroom environment.
- Communicates with administration and colleagues about classroom challenges.
- Participates in faculty committees, professional development workshops, and the sponsorship of student activities.
- Administers testing in accordance with division testing practices.
- Models non-discriminatory practices in all activities.
- Performs any other duties as assigned by the Principal or other appropriate administrators
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in education or subject field (required)
- Experience working with incarcerated or at-risk youth (preferred)
- Familiarity with research-based instructional strategies
- An unyielding belief that with the appropriate supports, coupled with high expectations, all students can significantly improve their academic skills, and can develop pro-social and culturally normative behaviors that will enable them to succeed at school and beyond
- Firm belief that all students have strengths and talents and that a good teacher helps students find these and use them to address weaknesses or overcome fears.

Salary and Benefits
Maya Angelou Schools and See Forever Foundation salaries are comparable to those of other public charter schools in the District of Columbia area. The pay range for this role is:
