Summary
The Temporary Shop Assistant supports workshop, yard, and fleet maintenance operations by providing general labour, mechanical assistance, inspections, driving, and yard services. This position works under supervision to assist mechanics, maintain a safe and organized yard, perform basic repairs and servicing, and transport vehicles, trailers, and parts in compliance with Occupational Health & Safety Act (OHSA) legislation and company policies.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma
Experience
Required
- Physical ability to perform demanding labour in a workshop and yard environment
- Mechanical aptitude and familiarity with hand and basic power tools
- Valid Driver's License
Preferred/Assets
- Class 3 Driver's License with Q (air brake) endorsement
- Previous experience in a workshop, fleet, construction, or heavy equipment environment
- Forklift or equipment operation experience (or willingness to obtain certification)

Physical and Environmental Conditions
- Frequent lifting, pushing, pulling, bending, kneeling and standing
- Exposure to noise, grease, oil, dust, and outdoor weather conditions
- Mandatory use of PPE (e.g., safety boots, high-visibility clothing, gloves, eye protection)
Duties
Workshop & Mechanical Support
- Act as a mechanical assistant to licensed technicians
- Perform oil services, lubrication, and basic preventative maintenance
- Complete small repairs such as lighting replacement, minor chip repairs, and wheel torque checks
- Assist with commissioning and decommissioning of vehicles and equipment
- Support bucket inspections (on-site and off-site, as directed)
- Wash, clean, grease, and prepare vehicles and components
- Conduct check-in and check-out inspections, documenting deficiencies
- Identify and report mechanical issues, damage, or unsafe conditions immediately
Yard & Facility Duties
- Maintain yard organization and clean-up to ensure safe traffic flow and storage
- Perform general yard maintenance, including seasonal housekeeping tasks
- Conduct unit moves and ferry work, positioning vehicles and equipment safely
- Assist with loading, unloading, and staging of equipment
Driving, Transport & Parts Running
- Complete parts pick-up and delivery / parts running between suppliers, yards, and job sites
- Perform vehicle pick-up and drop-off for service, inspection, or deployment
- Conduct short-haul driving within assigned operating areas
- Tow trailers as required (Class 3 license with Q endorsement preferred)
- Ensure loads are properly secured and vehicles are operated in accordance with legislation
