Job Description
JOB SUMMARY
As a newly established position within Russell Rowland, the Engineering Lead-Commercial is responsible for leading the Commercial Division and is accountable for its technical excellence, operational performance, financial success, client satisfaction, and sustainable growth. This role provides engineering leadership, supports project execution, develops technical staff, and partners with the Engineering Operations Manager and Executive leadership team to build a high-performing, profitable Commercial Division while delivering exceptional service to clients.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Technical Oversight and Engineering Leadership
• Provide technical leadership and oversight for engineering deliverables across all commercial projects.
• Perform technical reviews of calculations, drawings, and specifications to ensure quality, code compliance, and consistency.
• Serve as the primary technical resource for complex engineering challenges and design decisions.
• Establish and maintain engineering standards, quality control procedures, and best practices.
• Mentor engineers, EIs, and designers while promoting continuous technical development.
Production Coordination and Workflow Management
• Coordinates closely with the Engineering Operations Manager (EOM) to ensure projects are appropriately staffed, scheduled, and progress efficiently.
• Monitor division workload, utilization, backlog, and resource capacity to support operational performance.
• Assist in resolving project issues, prioritizing engineering resources, and removing production obstacles.
• Support division budgeting, forecasting, and financial performance through effective operational oversight.
• Track key operational metrics and recommend process improvements that increase efficiency and profitability.
Client and Project Support
• Serve as the technical lead and primary engineering resource for clients throughout project execution.
• Participate in client meetings, project coordination meetings, and technical presentations as needed.
• Support project managers and engineering staff by resolving technical issues and ensuring timely, responsive communication with clients.
• Assist with proposal development by providing technical scope, engineering approaches,
level-of-effort, estimates, and pricing input as needed.
Business and Client Development (Preferred)
• Foster long-term client relationships through exceptional technical service and responsiveness.
• Develop and maintain relationships within the commercial development, architecture, and construction communities.
• Participate in industry organizations and client meetings that support company growth.
• Identify opportunities for repeat business and new client relationships.
• Support marketing and business development initiatives by providing technical expertise and market insight.
ROLE QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
REQUIRED
• Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
• Professional Engineer (PE) license
• Minimum ten (10) years of progressive structural engineering experience in commercial type projects, including project management.
• Demonstrated expertise leading engineering teams or managing technical workflows.
• Strong technical expertise in structural design, codes, and engineering software.
• Excellent communication, leadership, and client relationship skills.
PREFERRED
• Master’s Degree
• Experience supporting business development, proposal preparation, and client relationship management.
• Experience managing operational performance, resource planning, and engineering financial metrics.
• Established relationships within the commercial building industry.
