About the role
GEL Engineering has a job opening for a hydrogeologist or environmental scientist to join the team of environmental and engineering professionals providing a comprehensive range of services to our clients. This role will focus on project management related to wastewater regulations, contaminant investigations, infrastructure environmental assessments, remediation projects, and permitting and compliance.
What you'll do
- Conduct project management duties including preparation of proposals, work plans, and reports; delegating and overseeing project team assignments; conducting or leading field team activities; and performing fiscal and other administration functions.
- Prepare proposals that include problem statements, detailed scopes of work, cost estimates, and project schedules.
- Collaborate with GEL’s multi-disciplinary teams of engineers, scientists, and other professionals to prepare site assessment and remediation plans and to perform project delivery activities such as report writing, data collection and interpretation, literature review, and development of recommendations for clients.
- Conduct thorough detailed technical writing reviews of reports written by others on the project team.
- Effectively communicate findings and recommendations internally and to the client. Coordinate and communicate with environmental regulatory agencies and participate in project meetings as a project representative with staff from government agencies.
- Provide technical support, oversight, quality assurance (QA) review, and management of projects involving:
- Groundwater, soil, surface water, vapor intrusion, and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) contaminant investigations.
- Key waste and wastewater regulations, including solid waste, hazardous waste, underground storage tanks, NPDES, brownfields, and other voluntary cleanup programs.
- Industrial and municipal facility and infrastructure environmental assessments, siting studies, and redevelopment support;
- Underground storage tank (UST) investigations and closures;
- Soil and Groundwater Remediation
- QA and quality control (QC) programs and plans;
- Waste characterization and disposal evaluations;
- Regulatory permitting and compliance.
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science or Master’s degree in geology, hydrogeology, environmental engineering, or related scientific field of study.
- A North or South Carolina Licensed Geologist.
- At least eight years of professional environmental experience, with at least three of the years directly supervising investigation and remediation of hazardous substance or waste disposal sites.
- A Registered Site Manager (RSM) in the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality’s Registered Environmental Consultant Program is a plus.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Qualified to serve as a testifying expert witness for litigation cases is a plus.
- Proficient in M365 software, and Deltek or other project tracking software.

Working Environment & Physical Demands
Work is performed primarily in the office or on location at commercial, government, and industrial client’s sites. Travel to client sites, contractor facilities, and industry events is required based on project needs but at a minimum may be 20% of the week.
