About the Role

The Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine (SMFM) is seeking an Assistant Vice President, Business Development & Industry Engagement to lead and grow relationships with pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical device, diagnostics, digital health, and other organizations working to improve maternal and fetal health. The Assistant Vice President will identify and develop mission-aligned partnerships that advance SMFM priorities while generating sustainable support for the Society’s programs.

The Assistant Vice President will serve as SMFM’s central point of entry for corporate and industry organizations seeking to engage with the Society, helping partners understand opportunities across SMFM and connecting them with the appropriate internal teams. The Assistant Vice President will have primary responsibility for the strategy, management, growth, and engagement of SMFM’s Corporate Council, including member recruitment and retention, executive engagement, benefit fulfillment, and using the Council as a platform for deeper strategic collaboration. The role will work across SMFM to translate organizational priorities and industry needs into well-structured partnerships while protecting SMFM’s scientific, educational, editorial, and policy independence.

The successful candidate will combine strategic thinking, business development, relationship management, and disciplined execution. They will be expected to understand SMFM’s programs and priorities, work effectively across departments, and develop customized opportunities that create value for SMFM, its members, patients, and corporate partners.

What You’ll Do

Corporate Partnership Strategy & Business Development

  • Develop and execute a corporate partnership strategy aligned with SMFM’s mission, strategic priorities, and financial objectives.
  • Build and manage executive-level relationships with current and prospective partners across pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical device, diagnostics, digital health, and related sectors.
  • Identify emerging scientific, therapeutic, technology, and market trends relevant to maternal-fetal medicine and translate them into partnership opportunities.
  • Develop new and expanded collaborations across areas such as education, research, workforce development, practice tools, quality improvement, innovation, data, and patient or clinician resources.
  • Build a strong pipeline of new business, renewals, and multi-year partnerships, with clear revenue and relationship goals.
  • Maintain an enterprise-level view of priority corporate relationships so SMFM can coordinate opportunities across departments and avoid duplicative or competing outreach.

Corporate Council Leadership

  • Lead the strategy, management, growth, and year-round engagement of the SMFM Corporate Council.
  • Serve as the primary relationship manager for Corporate Council member organizations and participating senior executives.
  • Recruit new members, manage renewals, strengthen retention, and ensure delivery of Corporate Council benefits.
  • Plan and facilitate Corporate Council meetings, executive roundtables, listening sessions, and other opportunities for substantive dialogue with SMFM leadership.
  • Regularly assess the Council’s value proposition, benefits, pricing, and engagement model and recommend improvements.
  • Use Corporate Council relationships to identify broader opportunities for strategic collaboration while maintaining clear boundaries around SMFM’s independent scientific and policy activities.

Partnership Development & Coordination

  • Work with SMFM program leaders to translate organizational priorities into compelling proposals, sponsorships, grants, and strategic partnership opportunities.
  • Coordinate business cases, budgets, pricing, scopes of work, deliverables, and executive presentations with appropriate staff.
  • Serve as the central point of coordination for significant industry opportunities across SMFM, partnering with education, public health initiatives, meetings, communications, finance, and other teams.
  • Coordinate industry opportunities from initial intake through proposal development, internal review and handoff, partner engagement, stewardship, and renewal.
  • Maintain an accurate pipeline of prospects, proposals, contracted partnerships, revenue, renewals, and future opportunities.
  • Ensure partnership programs have clear objectives, realistic resource requirements, measurable outcomes, and strong stewardship plans that support long-term partner relationships and renewal opportunities.

Relationship Management & Strategic Insight

  • Serve as a trusted and responsive point of contact for corporate partners and develop relationships across Medical Affairs, Clinical Development, Commercial, Market Access, HEOR, Corporate Affairs, Government Affairs, Patient Advocacy, and executive leadership.
  • Maintain regular engagement with priority partners, track relationship history and future potential, and develop account strategies for SMFM’s highest-priority relationships.
  • Advise the CEO and senior leadership on industry trends, emerging technologies, investment areas, and significant partnership opportunities relevant to maternal-fetal medicine.
  • Represent SMFM at relevant industry, maternal health, scientific, and healthcare meetings.
  • Develop strong knowledge of SMFM’s meetings, education, research, publications, clinical guidance, advocacy, membership, and other organizational assets to identify opportunities for mission-aligned collaboration.

Policies, Guardrails & Compliance

  • Ensure industry relationships are consistent with SMFM policies, nonprofit requirements, accreditation standards, and applicable industry guidelines and regulations.
  • Maintain clear separation between corporate funding and SMFM’s independent scientific, clinical, guideline, educational, editorial, and advocacy decision-making.
  • Work with leadership, legal counsel, finance, and program staff to appropriately structure corporate-supported activities and implement clear internal guardrails.
  • Ensure transparency, documentation, and appropriate internal coordination of corporate relationships.

  • Ability to work effectively across departments and maintain clear ownership and handoffs for cross-functional corporate opportunities.
  • Ability to appropriately handle confidential, commercially sensitive, and organizational information.
  • Commitment to SMFM’s mission and values.

Measures of Success

  • Growth and diversification of corporate partnership revenue and pipeline.
  • Growth, retention, and engagement of the SMFM Corporate Council.
  • Development, expansion, and renewal of meaningful strategic partnerships, including multi-year collaborations.
