Job Overview

1. The Asphalt Roller Operator is responsible for operating a steel wheel roller to compact asphalt pavement on heavy highway and road construction projects. The construction work of an operator is of a seasonal nature, typically occurring between the months of April and November.

Primary Responsibilities

1. Operate asphalt rollers to compact hot mix asphalt on highways, roadways, parking areas, and other paving projects.
2. Maintain proper rolling speed, overlap, and vibration settings based on material and project requirements.
3. Follow paving foreman and project specifications to achieve required pavement density and smoothness.
4. Perform routine equipment maintenance and identify equipment malfunctions.
5. Perform other duties as assigned.

Work Environment

1. There is constant exposure to various weather conditions typical in the states where the work is performed, including noise, dust, and other materials. The work environment is in areas where heavy equipment, power tools, and traffic are present. There is exposure to heights up to 50 feet and depths of up to 80 feet in this construction environment. Demonstrate or be corrected to 20/20 vision.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The physical demands of construction workers will vary depending on the work environment and will often change in real time.

1. Ability to maneuver under and over equipment, as well as climb into/out of the cabs utilizing steps and ladders.
2. Constant sitting during machine operation.
3. Moving over uneven terrain.
4. Constant use of foot and hand controls.
5. Use of track spade/shovel to clear mud from the tracks and underbelly of machine as needed.
6. Move barricades/sand bags to clear area as needed.
7. Ability to stand and walk around machine when completing pre-trip inspection, clearing underbelly, and throughout the worksite on uneven terrain.
8. The employee must be able to lift (including above shoulder or head), move, and carry up to 50 pounds frequently.
9. Frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to input information, handle, carry (with and without assistance), feel objects, tools (of varying size and weight), or controls.
10. Frequently reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, bend, twist, crouch, or crawl, talk and hear, and taste or smell.
11. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
12. Frequent exposure to high noise levels.

Required Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

1. High school diploma or GED equivalent.
2. 4+ years of finishing rolling experience.
3. Strong verbal and written communication skills.
4. Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
5. General knowledge of the heavy highway construction industry.
6. General knowledge of heavy equipment operation.
7. Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to heavy equipment operations.
8. Reliable Transportation.
