About This Position

JOB SUMMARY
-
Provides health care services by utilizing high frequency sound waves for medical purposes, as well as applying x-ray energy and computer processing techniques to assist in diagnosis or treatment. Works with other team members in the department to ensure all patients’ needs are met in a timely manner.

DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Overall performance of below indicated essential job duties:

Verifies order and patient prior to examination, obtain patient’s clinical history, reads chart/outpatient referral slip and interviews and communicates information to patient or appropriate family member.

Prepares patients for examinations and explains procedures to patient. Performs Ultrasound procedures. (Vascular, Abdominal, Retroperitoneal, OB/GYN, Doppler and Color Doppler). Observes and detects physical and psychological needs of patients during procedures requiring visual and auditory skills. Observes patient respiration rate. Detects change in patient behavior indicating patient distress, i.e. seizure, aspiration, choking, struggling or coughing and takes action as necessary.

Operates complex Ultrasound equipment pertinent to the department's needs (Real Time, B-mode, M-Mode, Doppler, Color Flow Imaging and all related recording systems), after demonstrating competency in theory and practical application of Ultrasound techniques.

Provides technical aide for surgical biopsy and aspiration procedures, maintains a sterile field while assisting physician by opening sterile needles, syringes, appropriate procedure trays and scanning in a sterile field with sterile gel.

Performs diagnostic testing on equipment and promptly reports malfunctioning equipment to the Supervisor or Radiology Administrative Director. Contacts field engineer for equipment service as needed.

Evaluates images for technical quality, manipulates display parameters and provides hard copy records (film) assuring proper patient identification is recorded on each image.

Practices principles of radiation protection to minimize exposure to patient, self and others at all times.

Demonstrates competency and knowledge in methodology of venipuncture including visual activity and digital sensitivity for vein selection and accurate manual dexterity to work with small needles and accurately place them in patient’s veins. Identifies and administers contrast media as prescribed by a licensed practitioner.

Demonstrates knowledge and competency in archival and digitized data. Properly handles and stores optical discs for future reference.

Assists in facilitating office/clinic throughput by performing other functions in which qualified and competent such as, but not limited to: rooming patients, collecting specimens and drawing blood, inserting IV’s, vital signs, breathing treatments, point of care testing, answering phones, and assisting with customer questions and concerns.

EDUCATION/LICENSE/CERTIFICATION/OTHER REQUIREMENTS
-
Minimum requirement:
-
Graduate of Radiography or Ultrasound Program approved by the JRCERT or equivalent.
-
Maintains active certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT) or American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARMDS) certification within six months from start. CCI certification is applicable to those that perform only cardiac and vascular studies.

Graduate of a Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation (CAHEA) accredited radiography program or equivalent.

Maintains active certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT).
-
Maintains active Radiographer Operators Certificate (ROC) in the Commonwealth of Kentucky or other applicable states as needed.

Achieves and maintains American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS).
