Patient Advocate

  • Position Summary
    • Under the general supervision of the Clinical Manager of Specialty Services, the Patient Advocate is responsible for serving as a liaison among patient, families, visitors and hospital staff. Facilitate resolution of complaints/grievances/request for patients and visitors. Respond to compliments submitted by patients and provide positive reinforcement to involved staff. Participate on committees, work groups, and/or process improvement teams that improve patient/customer satisfaction.
  • Education
    • Bachelors in Nursing - Required
  • Experience
    • 1 - 2 Years Acute Care Nursing - Required
    • Comfortable in a stressful environment. Possess strong customer service skills/interpersonal interactions; ability to handle difficult and angry people constructively; savvy enough to interact with physicians/senior leadership.
  • License & Certification
    • Professional License with State of Practice - Required
    • National Certification - Required
  • Core Job Functions
    • Obtains and directs concerns to the appropriate parties for timely response; handles conflict in an open, diplomatic, and compassionate manner with the highest degree of confidentiality. Assess, evaluates and verifies the need for out of town accommodations and meal passes for families; serves as an advocate for the patient. Collaborates with Nursing Management to meet customer service and patient satisfaction outcomes target for balanced scorecards.
    • Rounds daily on Managed Care patients admitted to the Hospital, addressing any issues or needs they may encounter. Reports promptly to Managed Care Department any service recovery issues and attempts.
    • Enters patient complaints in online event reporting system in a timely manner. Follow up to ensure completion by assigned departments and report variances to Clinical Manager. Documents closure of tickets accurately and in a timely manner.
    • Communicates with outside agencies as appropriate and within Hospital guidelines, such as funeral homes, organ procurement agencies and coroner. Bodies are admitted and released from the morgue; paperwork and log sheets completed and funeral home and/or Coroner's office notified. Manages process for patient valuables safe and assists Managers in investigating and replacing lost medical valuables if necessary.
    • Sends grievance letter to appropriate Department Manager, Director, Specialty Services Manager and Director of Professional Practice and sends initial acknowledgment letter to patient. Schedules grievance review meeting with appropriate management leadership and Chief Nursing Officer. Closes grievance in a timely manner per policy when action plan/final letter sent to patient.
