Job Description

Ophthalmic Assistant (NON CERTIFIED)

General Summary: The Ophthalmic Assistant assists the physician in organizing, implementing and evaluating the activities that occur in the ophthalmology environment by performing the assigned technical duties.

Essential Job Functions*:

• Under direction and supervision of providers and supervisor, individualizes the ophthalmological planning of each patient prior to the patient seeing the physician by: - Performs needed test (Optomap, OCT, Visual Field, Photography, etc.) - Read all glasses prior to exam - Conducts contact lens insertion and removal training - Consulting with physician if needed - Having knowledge and understanding of eye anatomy and physiology - Knowing the common complications of eye diseases

• Prepares exam and testing rooms and all supplies/equipment to ensure environmental safety for patients and staff as demonstrated by: - Turn all equipment on and make sure it is in working order and report any unsafe working conditions to the appropriate person - Selecting the appropriate supplies and equipment - Verifying special procedures that need sterile techniques - Identifying principles and techniques of disinfecting, sterilization and environmental control - Assist in efficient room turnover

• Demonstrates competency of assigned functions and application of basic and current knowledge by: - Anticipates the needs of the provider and patient - Identifies testing needed and performs the appropriate testing - Knowing how to use all testing devices and supplies needed for using the equipment - Maintaining a neat and clean environment for all procedures and patient exam rooms - Differentiate between clean, contaminated and sterile areas • Attends and participates in hospital/departmental meetings as required.

• Complies with hospital and departmental policies, procedures, regulations and standards as related to the job.

• Demonstrates hospital’s stated mission and values of teamwork, respect and communication with co-workers, patients, families and visitors. • Actively and appropriately participates in problem-solving identification and resolution, both intra- and inter-departmentally.

• Meets department customer service standards and strives to enhance the level of customer service provided.

Qualifications:

• Education Required: High School Graduate

• Work Experience Required: Clinical experience in a health care setting. Preferred: Previous experience in an ophthalmology practice or other health care setting

• Licensure/Certifications/Registrations Required: Preferred: JCAHPO certified

• Other Skills/Knowledge Required: Ability to respond appropriately to changing patient and staffing needs. Demonstrated ability to make independent judgments in times of need along with the ability to seek guidance and/or support from appropriate resources. Computer literacy. Ability to write clearly and concisely. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to give and accept feedback in a constructive
