Job Description

Responsible for the excellence of nursing care and staff performance by implementing the goals of the hospital and the individual unit. Maintains the day to day operational aspect of the Medical/Surgical unit in conjunction with other units and departments in the hospital.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for the day-to-day operation of unit to include clinical excellence and effective collaboration in the interdisciplinary team.
  • Excellence in clinical competence in all aspects of assigned unit. Serves as a role model and clinical resource person, especially for all new staff.
  • Promotes and develops open communication between all staff on all shifts of assigned unit.
  • Staffing assignments are patient care centered and based on patients' acuity – assures that this is followed on all shifts.
  • Assures that nursing processes are applied to each patient appropriately. Sees that documentation is complete; i.e., care plans, Kardex, nurse notes, etc.
  • Assists and encourages staff to reach optimum potential, especially in areas of charge, relief charge, QA/QI and educational development.
  • Maintains a safe physical environment for patient, staff, family and visitors by observing all staff – maintain infection control standards.
  • Collaborate with Clinical Leader in the evaluation and professional development and discipline of all staff on unit.
  • Collaborates with Clinical Leader in developing and implementing unit specific goals while adhering to hospital wide goals. Participates in reviewing/revising PCS policy and procedures.
  • Performs any other duties as assigned.

EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of five years of health care experience in a clinical setting, preferably in an inpatient area.
  • Previous leadership experience and certification in related field is preferred.

EDUCATION

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, currently licensed in the state of NY. BSN or BS in a health related field is required or presently enrolled in a BSN program.
  • Membership in a professional organization is preferred.


LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS

  • Current NYS Registered Nurse license
  • Current BLS/ACLS certification
  • Recommended: certification in clinical area


OTHER

  • Has demonstrated commitment to continuing professional development and standard of excellence as a nursing practitioner with leadership qualities.
