About the role

  • The Prime Data Centers (PDC) Controls Engineer is responsible for leading the controls engineering efforts for data center projects, including new construction, phased expansions, retrofits, and upgrades. This role places a strong emphasis on drafting and maintaining comprehensive design standards, particularly for BAS/BMS/EPMS/DCIM system. The Controls Engineer will collaborate across departments—Construction, Procurement, Operations—and with external partners to ensure seamless project delivery and high-quality engineering outcomes.

What you'll do

  • Draft, review, and maintain controls design standards for BAS, BMS, EPMS, and DCIM systems, ensuring consistency, quality, and alignment with best practices across all projects.
  • Oversee the development and updating of specifications, RFPs, and sequences of operation for control systems, ensuring they are optimized for long-term sustainability and efficiency.
  • Lead the drafting and maintenance of Tridium Niagara 4 standards across all control system projects, ensuring system consistency and compatibility.
  • Validate consultant and contractor deliverables, including schematics, P&IDs, network topologies, and submittals, ensuring they comply with established design standards.
  • Collaborate with IT team to ensure secure network connectivity for control systems, including proper segmentation, remote access controls, and vulnerability mitigation.
  • Work closely with Construction and Procurement teams to procure, install, and commission control systems, ensuring compliance with design standards; support Level 4/5 commissioning and MOP reviews
  • Partner with Operations, Construction, and Procurement to ensure that designs meet cost, performance, and sustainability objectives while adhering to established standards.
  • Review PUE, load sizing, ROI/payback, CFD, and energy modeling data to inform system design, and contribute to value engineering efforts by proposing cost-effective, sustainable solutions.
  • Research and incorporate emerging technologies into the design standards, focusing on advancements that improve system performance and sustainability.
  • Represent the controls engineering function in design meetings with customers, consultants, and contractors, ensuring that PDC’s design standards are upheld in all phases of the project.
  • Lead and coordinate integration with customer DCIM platforms, ensuring all monitoring, controls, and reporting functions meet project requirements and operational standards.
  • Support on-site controls commissioning activities to ensure systems operate in accordance with design intent and project requirements.
  • Provide ongoing support to troubleshoot and resolve controls system issues, ensuring timely responses to any system failures or emergencies.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering (or equivalent) from an accredited university or college preferred, or equivalent work/military experience.
  • 3+ years of experience in building design and construction, with a focus on controls systems engineering, mission-critical and/or data center preferred.
  • Experience with Tridium Niagara 4, including system design, programming, and integration of BMS/EPMS systems.
  • Proficient in drafting and maintaining engineering standards for controls systems, ensuring their integration into project workflows.
  • Strong understanding of critical cooling infrastructure within a data center, and how power sources impact cooling redundancy.
  • Expertise with tools such as Bluebeam, Procore, CxAlloy, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Understanding of applicable construction codes, particularly the International Building Code (IBC) and International Mechanical Code (IMC).
  • Knowledge of data center industry standards (e.g., ASHRAE TC9.9, BICSI Data Center Standards).
  • Excellent interdepartmental collaboration skills, with a demonstrated ability to coordinate between departments and external stakeholders to ensure projects adhere to standards and timelines.
