Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the general supervision of the Facilities Director, this position is responsible for cleaning and maintaining the Catholic Social Services (CSS) Debarr location building, facilities, and equipment to ensure a safe, clean, and healthy environment. This role performs custodial duties, including waste removal and general upkeep, and may assist with basic maintenance tasks as needed.

The Catholic Social Services Facilities Team is a rigorous team that strives to provide the best possible service to the agency. Driven by agency focus and leadership goals the Facilities Team is constantly assigned special projects on top of the day-to-day agency tasks and work schedule

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES

Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and communicate effectively with staff, contractors, and the public.

Basic knowledge of custodial practices, tools, and equipment used in building and grounds maintenance.

Ability to use sound judgment in completing assigned tasks.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Custodial Responsibilities:

  • Clean and maintain facilities, including floors, restrooms, offices, and common areas.
  • Use appropriate cleaning tools, equipment, and products to ensure a safe and sanitary environment.
  • Collect, remove, and properly dispose of trash, recycling, and other waste in accordance with agency policies.
  • Maintain and store cleaning supplies and equipment safely.

Building Maintenance:

  • Perform minor maintenance tasks such as replacing light bulbs, clearing minor clogs, and addressing simple facility issues.
  • Identify and report maintenance needs requiring higher-level repair or technical expertise.

Facilities Support:

  • Provide support to the Facilities Team on projects and work assignments as directed.
  • Assist with tasks such as moving furniture and equipment, loading/unloading materials, and completing dump runs.
  • Support site preparation and clean-up for maintenance or project work.
  • Perform general labor tasks associated with facility projects, while not performing skilled maintenance or repair work assigned to Facilities Technicians.

Facility Access:

  • Assist with room setups for meetings and events, including moving tables, chairs, and equipment.

Inventory/ Stock Supplies:

  • Monitor and maintain janitorial supply inventory.
  • Notify Facilities Director when supplies need to be replenished.

Ground Maintenance:

  • Perform basic groundskeeping, including mowing, raking, clearing walkways, and removing snow and ice manually or with equipment.

Furniture & Equipment:

  • Assist with moving and installing office furniture and equipment, including desks, cabinets, and whiteboards.

General:

  • Respond to work orders in a timely manner.
  • Attend required trainings and participate in agency initiatives as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Maintain regular and reliable attendance.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education Requirement: High School Diploma or equivalent.

Minimum Experience Requirement: One (1) year of relevant custodial or maintenance experience.

A relevant combination of education and experience may be considered.

A valid driver’s license, auto insurance, and personal vehicle are required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work Environment: Work is performed in a variety of environments, including office settings, residential facilities, and outdoor locations. Duties may involve exposure to extreme temperatures, noise, dust, wet conditions, and cleaning chemicals. Work may occur in inclement weather conditions.

Typical schedule is Monday through Friday, 11:00am – 7:00pm, with flexibility required based on operational needs.

Physical Demands: This position requires the ability to perform physical labor, including lifting and/or moving up to 50 pounds regularly and up to 100 pounds with assistance.

The role requires frequent bending, lifting, climbing, and extend periods of standing or walking.

The position also requires the operation of tools and equipment such as hand tools, lawn movers, and snow blowers.

Travel: Travel within Anchorage is required based on job site needs. Travel outside of Alaska is not expected.
