SALARY: RANGE 40, STEP A ($34.94)

Under the supervision of an assigned supervisor, the Health Technician (LVN) performs a variety of medical activities and procedures; meets medical and physical needs of all students including those with exceptional needs in accordance with state law and District policy. Clerical duties will include all necessary forms and reports relating to the School Medi-Cal Billing Program. The Health Technician will also assist and coordinate with state-mandated student screening and data collection.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: (Screening Criteria) Minimum requirements include: graduating from an accredited vocational nursing program or junior college. Two years of acute nursing experience preferably working with children. Experience involving public contact, preferably in a school setting.
LICENSE AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: (Screening Criteria) Currently licensed by the State of California as Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN). Possess current First Aid and CPR certification. Current (less than 30 days) DMV printout. Supplemental application. Certification stating freedom from tuberculosis. (Must upload copies of LVN License, First Aid card, CPR card and DMV printout (official copy from the DMV; on-line copy is acceptable) with this application).

Maintain an accurate updated list of students requiring medication on a regular basis and administers medication (to include injections) as prescribed by the students' physician. E

Perform routine first aid procedures. E

Provide specialized health care and Targeted Case Management in coordination with a Registered Nurse. E

Assist a Registered Nurse in maintaining all student health records to ensure all requirements for students are met. E

Providing mandated student screening with follow up care and data collection. E

Ensure that District health and safety regulations are followed. E

Maintain an accurate, updated list of all students with health needs. E

Perform all clerical record keeping and data collection necessary to comply with the school Medi-Cal Billing Program. E

Work collaboratively with the central services business office to ensure student data is accurate for Medi-Cal billing purposes and submitted on schedule, including assessments and counseling by a registered nurse. E

Maintains health care plans, medical emergency cards, health records (e.g. mandated screening, etc.) for the purpose of providing information required by legal and professional standards. E

Participates in various meetings including IEP's for the purpose of sharing information and/or improving one's skills/knowledge. E

Performs home visits and/or hospital visits for the purpose of verifying status of student. E

Prepares documentation (e.g. daily health log, mandated monthly status reports, accident reports, etc.) for the purpose of providing written support and/or conveying information and provides specialized health care and Targeted Case Management in coordination with the Registered Nurse. E

Assist nurse, students, and staff for the purpose of providing specialized treatments, monitoring medical treatments and testing. E

Provides general information on health related topics for the purpose of keeping teachers, students and parents up to date on such issues as drug prevention, personal hygiene and Planned Parenthood. E

Administers first-aid, medication, and medical treatments for the purpose of providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile and/or injured children; monitors students referred to the health office for the purpose of ensuring their safety and/or referring to a medical professional for review and/or services. E

Assist with mandated screenings for the purpose of referring medical conditions and/or providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile and/or injured students. E

Advises assigned administrator of observations involving students' safety, suspected child abuse, and other health related issues for the purpose of identifying problems, referring for proper treatment and adhering to regulatory and legal requirements.

Attends meetings, workshops, and seminars as assigned for the purpose of gathering information required to perform functions.

Maintains health office environment including ordering first-aid supplies, equipment, stock and distributes first-aid supplies.

Communicates with parents, students, health care providers, and/or public agencies for the purpose of promoting needed treatment and/or complying with legal requirements.

Maintain information on a variety of health subjects and other health related materials.

Maintains student health informational records for the purpose of providing information required by regulatory requirements.

Refers students, under the direction of a Registered Nurse, requiring further medical attention for the purpose of providing information on available follow-up treatment and services.

Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
KNOWLEDGE OF: CPR and First Aid procedures; Signs and symptoms of childhood and/or adolescent illnesses. Oral and written communication skills, interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy, telephone techniques/etiquette, operation of business machines, including typewriter, computer terminal, copier, fax and calculator, modern office practices, procedures and record-keeping.

ABILITY TO: Provide first aid to ill or injured student, recognize abnormal health characteristics, analyze situation accurately and adopt an effective course of action, plan and organize work, maintain confidentiality with work duties and responsibilities with students, staff, parents and members of the community, perform clerical duties in school office following completion of Medi-Cal billing program requirements, understand and follow oral and written directions, meet time lines and work schedules, communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, read, interpret and follow regulations, policies and procedures. Deal tactfully and courteously with students, staff and public, work cooperatively with others. Provide accurate data for computer data banks or legible hand-written logs.
