Job Description

Sr. Transition GL Accountant

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Sr. Transition GL Accountant based in United States.

This is a high-impact accounting role focused on bringing newly acquired small businesses from complex or inconsistent legacy books to clean, reliable, GAAP-aligned financial systems.
You’ll operate as part of a specialized transition team, stepping into businesses that need accounting cleanup, process improvement, and stronger controls.
The role combines hands-on general ledger accounting, month-end close, reconciliations, ERP transitions, reporting, and process automation.
You’ll work across multiple businesses while partnering closely with controllers, finance leaders, acquisition teams, and local staff.
Success means transforming messy accounting environments into organized, audit-ready processes that can be smoothly handed off to ongoing accounting teams.
You’ll also help standardize transition processes, improve the onboarding playbook, and make each future integration more efficient.
This is an ideal opportunity for an adaptable accounting professional who enjoys solving unfamiliar problems, improving systems, and working at speed without compromising accuracy.

Accountabilities
  • General Ledger & Month-End Close: Serve as the primary GL accountant for multiple businesses undergoing transition, preparing accruals, reserves, reclasses, intercompany entries, and other accounting adjustments while consistently closing the books within an 8–10 business-day cycle.
  • Balance Sheet Reconciliation: Reconcile cash, credit cards, fixed assets, tax liabilities, payroll liabilities, benefits, AP, prepaids, inventory, customer deposits, and other balance-sheet accounts to establish accurate financial records.
  • Accounting Cleanup: Identify and resolve inherited accounting issues involving payroll and benefits, accruals, deferred revenue, liabilities, AP, inventory, and other areas requiring GAAP-aligned cleanup.
  • ERP & Systems Transition: Support GL and ERP migrations, system integrations, testing, configuration, and troubleshooting while mapping legacy charts of accounts to standardized structures.
  • Chart of Accounts & Reporting: Configure account structures, segments, dimensions, and reporting hierarchies to create efficient and decision-useful financial reporting.
  • AP & Financial Processes: Modernize AP workflows and tools, strengthen credit-card transaction syncing and coding/approval processes, and coordinate payment releases with business leadership.
  • Inventory & Revenue Accounting: Review inventory processes and COGS recognition to ensure alignment with revenue recognition practices and improve accounting accuracy.
  • Financial Analysis & Advisory: Turn complex accounting transactions into clear business insights, establish reliable reporting baselines, and communicate accounting impacts in practical, understandable terms.
  • Controls & Audit Readiness: Identify control gaps, support audit, tax, and due-diligence requests, and maintain strong documentation and digital audit trails throughout each transition.
  • Process Improvement & Automation: Replace manual, disconnected, or spreadsheet-driven processes with scalable workflows and technology-enabled solutions that improve efficiency and shorten close timelines.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Partner with controllers, GL accountants, AP specialists, finance leaders, acquisition teams, and local business staff to keep accounting data, systems, and processes aligned.
  • Training & Handoffs: Train local staff on new workflows and close responsibilities, create SOPs and training materials, participate in knowledge-transfer sessions, and deliver clean transitions to ongoing accounting teams.
  • Transition Strategy: Contribute to improving the transition playbook, onboarding KPIs, and standardized processes so each subsequent business integration becomes faster and more effective.
Requirements
  • Accounting Experience: Strong experience in general ledger accounting, reconciliations, month-end close, financial reporting, and accounting cleanup, ideally within multi-entity, acquisition, or fast-paced environments.
  • Technical Accounting: Comfortable preparing and reviewing accruals, reserves, reclasses, intercompany entries, payroll and benefits liabilities, deferred revenue, prepaids, inventory, AP, and other balance-sheet accounts.
  • Systems Expertise: Comfortable working with unfamiliar ERP and accounting systems, supporting migrations and integrations, and configuring account structures, dimensions, segments, and reporting hierarchies.
  • Process Improvement: Demonstrated ability to identify inefficient accounting workflows and replace manual or fragmented processes with cleaner, more scalable solutions.
  • Analytical Mindset: Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to investigate incomplete or inconsistent financial information, determine root causes, and establish reliable accounting baselines.
  • Controls & Compliance: Understanding of GAAP, internal controls, audit readiness, documentation standards, and the importance of maintaining accurate digital audit trails.
  • Technology Orientation: Comfortable adopting new technologies and tools without needing a detailed roadmap, with an interest in automation and continuously improving accounting operations.
  • Communication & Training: Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain accounting concepts clearly to non-accounting stakeholders and coach local finance teams.
  • Adaptability: Comfortable managing multiple priorities, changing systems, unfamiliar business environments, and tight transition timelines while maintaining high standards for accuracy.
  • Ownership: Proactive, dependable, organized, and highly accountable, with the persistence and frustration tolerance needed to work through complex accounting puzzles.
  • Collaboration: Able to meet teammates and local business staff where they are, build trust, flag risks early, and guide stakeholders toward successful outcomes.
  • Mindset & Values: Brings initiative, thoughtful decision-making, continuous-improvement thinking, and a strong commitment to dependable execution.
Benefits
  • Healthcare: Medical, dental, and vision coverage, with employee premiums fully covered and dependents covered on most plans.
  • Flexible Spending: Access to FSA/HSA benefits.
  • Vacation: 15 days of vacation time to support rest and work-life balance.
  • Paid Holidays: Paid time off for 19 holidays, plus 5 sick days and one floating holiday of your choice.
  • Expert Support: Ongoing guidance and advice from accounting, finance, and small-business experts.
  • Professional Growth: Exposure to diverse accounting environments, acquisitions, systems, and process-improvement initiatives.
  • Meaningful Ownership: The opportunity to directly improve financial operations across multiple businesses and help build scalable transition practices.
