THE CITY OF LEAWOOD, KANSAS IS HIRING AN EXPERIENCED CONSTRUCTION INSPECTOR

Do you have an eye for detail and take pride in making sure construction work is done right? Are you comfortable working in the field, interpreting construction plans and specifications, and communicating with contractors, engineers, and property owners? If so, the City of Leawood is looking for an experienced Construction Inspector to join our Public Works Department.

As a Construction Inspector, you'll play an important role in protecting the quality and integrity of Leawood's public infrastructure. You'll inspect construction activities involving streets, curbs, sidewalks, storm sewers, right-of-way improvements, and other public infrastructure to ensure work complies with approved plans, specifications, City standards, and applicable requirements. From monitoring construction and documenting daily progress to coordinating materials testing, verifying quantities, and identifying issues in the field, you'll help ensure City projects are constructed safely, accurately, and to the high standards our community expects.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

    Inspect and maintain daily record of construction activities for public infrastructure projects ranging from streets, curbs and storm sewers, to ensure contractor compliance with approved project plans, details, good construction practices and specifications.Inspect sidewalks, sidewalk ramps, and driveway approach construction to verify dimensions, alignment, slopes, and sub-grade are completed according to ADA standards, plans, contract requirements, and City standards. Verify required right-of-way permits have been obtained, verifying project information including contractor information, ensures proper restoration of right-of-way surrounding work areas, and locating City utilities. Prepare daily inspection reports, coordinate materials testing, measure quantities, and calculate pay estimates for assigned projects during the construction phase. Conduct final inspection of Public Improvement and Infrastructure projects before expiration of bond.Oversee the installation and maintenance of erosion control and traffic control devices.Assist Engineers and Right-of-Way Technician with obtaining right-of-way and easements from property owners.Assist with snow removal operations and other emergency activities that may require working extended shifts.

WHAT YOU BRING

Like working on various projects, from flood reduction to traffic safety to multimillion-dollar street reconstructions.Strong organizational skills with the ability to successfully manage multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines.Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy, compliance, and documentation.A proactive, collaborative approach with a commitment to providing outstanding customer service.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Must have six (6) years of experience in the construction industry and inspection/field experience, or equivalent experience. Equivalent experience includes an Associate’s degree in construction management or a related field plus four (4) years of related experience. Certifications and trainings required to have or be able to achieve within the time frame determined by the Director of Public Works include ABC’s of BMPs, Erosion and Sediment Control Done Right, KDOT’s Inspection Course for Basic Structures, Asphalt and Concrete Paving, ACI Concrete Testing Certification, IMSA’s Work Zone Traffic Control Course, and NHI’s Pipe Installation, Inspection, and Quality Technician. Must have experience using Microsoft Office Suites.

PREFERRED, BUT NOT REQUIRED

Have experience as a Construction Inspector in a municipality or public works department. Have completed the ABC’s of BMPs, Erosion and Sediment Control Done Right and IMSA’s Work Zone Traffic Control Course training.Have completed the KDOT’s Inspection Course for Basic Structures, Asphalt and Concrete Paving.Hold an ACI Concrete Testing Certification and NHI’s Pipe Installation, Inspection, and Quality Technician.

SCHEDULE & WORK ENVIRONMENT

    Typical schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PMThere may be times when this position will be required to adjust the schedule to accommodate project deadlines or contractors.

PAY & BENEFITS

    Starting Rate of Pay: $29.86 - $36.58 / hour, depending on qualificationsRetirement options: Kansas Public Employees Retirement System (KPERS) and 457(b) optionsInsurance benefits: begins the first day of the month after hire datePaid Time Off: vacation, sick, and personal leave plus holidays
