About us:

Founded in 1960, the Youth Services Bureau of Ottawa (YSB) is one of the largest and most comprehensive non-profit agencies in Ottawa and a registered charity. It provides mental health services, employment programs, emergency shelter, community, health and housing services, and justice programs to youth in the Ottawa area, serving between 2,500 and 3,000 at‑risk individuals aged 12+ and their families every month. YSB employs 400 caring professionals in a unionized environment in over 22 locations across Ottawa.

The Nurse, as a member of the multi-disciplinary team within the Youth Justice Services at William E Hay/Sherwood, will provide direct clinical nursing services to the youth within the program. The Nurse will also support the staff by providing clinical leadership with respect to the physical and mental health of the youth, in collaboration with the Youth Justice team.

What you will do:

  • Delivery of direct clinical services, including; monitoring the physical health of youth within the program and initiating referrals to the Nurse Practitioner or Psychiatrist as indicated; Performing Intake Assessments and ongoing evaluation of youth as required; liaising with clinical staff, pharmacy, and external health providers; Monitoring of medications, (especially psychotropic medication) and providing psychoeducation and support around these with the youth and their family; delivery of health-related teaching to youth including hygiene, sleep, sexual health, nutrition, etc; coordination of primary health care services within the community (non-urgent dental/medical appointments); and support for any emergency health concerns that arise while the youth are in program.
  • Medication management, including; training and supporting staff who deliver medications to the youth in program; maintenance and monitoring of the medication administration processes; ensuring the youth’s medical files are complete and meet Ministry and Organizational compliance standards
  • Staff education and training: Develop and provide training and educational materials for staff related to physical and mental health issues impacting youth; collaborate with the clinical staff and clinical director around opportunities for ongoing staff development and training related to key concepts in youth mental health
  • Administrative responsibilities/Other: Coordination and oversight of client prescriptions, medications, and medical supplies; Oversee the supplies and physical resources in the medical treatment areas and clinic; regular audits of medical charts; provide supervision to students as needed

This opportunity may be right for you if you have:

  • A Nursing degree from a recognized and accredited university. BScN preferred. (A combination of relevant education and experience may also be considered).
  • An active license from the College of Nurses of Ontario in good standing
  • Minimum five years of clinical experience in pediatrics, youth mental health, or a related area of practice
  • Knowledge of and experience working with youth and families with mental health needs
  • Experience delivering psychoeducation to youth and their families
  • Excellent clinical assessment skills, including suicide risk assessments
  • Ability to form strong therapeutic relationships
  • Strong organizational skills, time management, written and verbal communication, and attention to detail
  • Current certification in CPR and First Aid

Additional Qualifications:

  • Successful applicants will be required to provide a clear Broad Police check, obtained within the past six (6) months, as a condition of employment with YSB.
  • Successful applicants will be required to provide YSB with satisfactory Pre-employment medical testing including up-to-date immunizations and TB test
  • To confirm language proficiency required for this position, successful candidates may be requested to undergo an oral and written assessment conducted by a third-party provider, arranged by YSB. Candidates must meet the minimum required linguistic profile before their employment start date.

Additional compensation: (this should be adjusted to each role):

  • This position may qualify for overtime at 1.5 rate after 40 hours worked per week, as determined by YSB polices and the Collective Agreement in place;
  • This position may qualify for emergency shift compensation at 1.5 rate, as determined by YSB polices and the Collective Agreement in place.

Please be advised that the number of overtime, on-call and emergency shift hours is not guaranteed, varies by position and is determined based on each program’s operational needs, YSB policies and Collective Agreement in place.
