Reports to: Executive Director/Controller Starting Pay: $16 Status: Part Time Non-exempt

20-28 hours/week - hours will vary

Qualifications:

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED
  • License/Certification: Valid Indiana Driver’s License with required endorsements and has demonstrated safe driving record.
  • Training: Upon hire applicants must be able to acquire the following certificates, and or licenses. Whitley County Solid Waste Management District (WCSWMD) will cover costs associated with obtaining these: Forklift, Type 1 EPA certification, Hazwopper, Bulb Eater, 1st aid including CPR and bloodborne pathogens, and Hazmat DOT.

Position Overview: Employee performs routine, standardized daily assignments with moderate supervision, requiring some care and skill to prevent damage to tools and equipment and prevent injury to self and others.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Operates various heavy equipment and trucks in managing solid waste and maintaining condition of site property.
  • Equipment operated includes company truck, forklift, compactor, refrigerant recovery machine, bulb eater, and other equipment as may be necessary for performance of duties.
  • Maintains all sites including painting, compacting trash, removing snow and ice in winter, and picking up litter and other duties as may be necessary for site maintenance.
  • Collects, delivers, and repairs recycling containers located in Whitley County as needed.
  • Assists in maintaining vehicles and equipment as needed such as washing/cleaning forklift, company truck, and recycling containers.
  • Reports equipment malfunctions to the Executive Director/Controller.
  • Records maintenance activity on log as required including but not limited to forklift inspection sheet, bulb eater maintenance log, and refrigerant small appliance recovery log.
  • Receives trash and recyclables from customers and assists with the unloading and placing in appropriate dumpsters as needed.
  • Performs all necessary forms of communication with customers such as but not limited to answering phone calls, emails, and in person communications.
  • Rejects inappropriate items and explains requirements to customers, including which items are recyclable and those which are not recyclable at the present time.
  • Receives payment from customers, gives accurate change and enters receipts into the computer.
  • Operates trash compactor, monitors, and maintains all trip dumpsters, and open tops. Reports daily to the Executive Director/Controller when containers are full.
  • Locks/unlocks gates and maintains grounds sweeping, picking up litter, hosing ground under compactor, clearing walkways, spreading salt, and shoveling/sweeping snow as needed in winter.
  • Sorts and processes boxes and barrels for household hazardous waist and prepares them for shipment.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned within the scope of training.

  • Working knowledge of and ability to make practical application of department safety policies and procedures with ability to take proper precautions and ensure safety of self and others
  • Ability to properly operate a variety of trucks, and tools as assigned – forklift, pallet jack, and hand carts.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions and work along or with others in a team environment.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with co-workers and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities, and disabilities.
  • Offers assistance to other staff as workload permits.
  • Supports and encourages a harmonious working relationship with other staff members and works effectively as a team member to provide quality service to taxpayers and community.
  • Employees are expected to work occasional Saturday shifts.
  • Working knowledge of acceptable materials and proper methods of preparing them for recycling.
  • Ability to perform simple arithmetic calculations, receive and records monies, and provides accurate change.
  • Ability to effectively perform the essential duties of the position – including lifting/carrying objects weighing 75 pounds or less, bending, reaching, and handling/grasping objects.
  • Ability to work alone and with others in a team environment, often under time pressure.
  • Difficulty of Work and Physical Effort: Employee is exposed to inclement weather daily which includes working outdoors and is frequently exposed to normal hazards associated with site maintenance, such as: traffic, noise, grease, dirt, dust, vehicle/chemical fumes, and extreme temperatures. Safety precautions must be followed at all times to avoid injury to self and others.

Must have the ability to physically perform assigned duties, including driving, close and far vision, depth perception, hearing sounds/communication, handling/grasping/fingering objects, and walking on uneven terrain, lifting/carrying; objects weighing 75 pounds or less, standing, reaching, bending, and crouching/kneeling.

Personal Work Relationships: Employee communicates as needed with co-workers, other government personnel, the public, and the Whitley County Solid Waste Management Board for the purpose of exchanging and explaining information.
