Position Summary
The Buyer/Planner is responsible for supporting material planning, procurement, supplier coordination, and production readiness activities within a technical manufacturing environment. This role manages complex purchased components, outside processing, consumables, Kanban programs, long-lead material requirements, and supplier follow-up while supporting customer demand, production schedules, inventory objectives, and supplier performance.
This position requires strong ERP/MRP capabilities, technical purchasing experience, backflushing experience, BOM and drawing comprehension, cross-functional coordination, and the ability to support supplier documentation and data package requirements. The Buyer/Planner works closely with Planning, Purchasing, Engineering, Quality, Configuration Management, Stockroom, Production, Finance, and external suppliers to ensure material availability, cost effectiveness, schedule alignment, and compliance with customer requirements.
Essential Job Functions
- Review and analyze ERP/MRP requirements, purchase requisitions, inventory levels, open orders, supplier lead times, and forecast demand to support production and customer delivery commitments.
- Create, release, confirm, expedite, and manage purchase orders, purchase change orders, RFQs, and supplier commitments for assigned commodities, including PWBAs, bare boards, machined parts, transducers, RTDs, connectors, electronics, wire, consumables, sensors, hardware, gaskets, plugs, and outside processing.
- Coordinate purchasing and planning activities with Manufacturing, Planning, Engineering, Quality, Configuration Management, Stockroom, Customer Service, and suppliers to resolve material constraints, production risks, delivery issues, and technical sourcing requirements.
- Support complex sourcing projects, including PWBA supplier transitions, BOM cross-referencing, supplier quote packages, manufacturer part number and manufacturer name validation, drawing review coordination, and approved alternate sourcing opportunities.
- Partner with Engineering, Quality, and Configuration Management to evaluate acceptable alternates, source-controlled drawing updates, supplier qualifications, documentation needs, and customer data package requirements.
- Manage supplier follow-up, delivery commitments, open order reports, exception reports, move-in requests, past-due purchase orders, and proactive recovery plans for critical materials.
- Support inventory optimization by evaluating long-lead components, tariff exposure, excess inventory, supplier-sold material, lot traceability last-price-paid data, and material release coordination with the stockroom.
- Maintain planning and procurement data integrity in the ERP system, including supplier commitments, planning parameters, item data, delivery dates, quote information, purchase order status, and material availability.
- Manage or support Kanban programs for consumables, wire, test/select resistors, customer-specific materials, and other demand streams not fully driven through standard ERP/MRP signals.
- Support long-range material planning for legacy customers, including one-year to eighteen-month demand visibility, critical reporting, qualification builds, purchased components, SOW changes, and production readiness activities.
- Process supplier invoices, resolve purchasing discrepancies, support cost analysis, and identify cost savings, lead-time reduction, alternate sourcing, and make-versus-buy opportunities.
- Provide guidance, issue resolution, and cross-functional communication related to material availability, supplier performance, schedule risk, and production support priorities.
Preferred Skills
- 5+ years of progressive experience in purchasing, planning, materials, supply chain, or production support within a manufacturing environment.
- Experience in technical, regulated, configured, or engineered product manufacturing preferred.
- Planning experience is preferred, but not required.
- ERP/MRP experience required; Syteline experience strongly preferred.
- Ability to understand and analyze MRP outputs, supply/demand relationships, stock status reports, shortage reports, open order reports, and production requirements.
- Experience with technical purchasing, BOM structures, drawings, schematics, blueprints, configuration management, source-controlled drawings, and component-level sourcing.
- Experience supporting RFQs, supplier transitions, contract manufacturing, outside processing, supplier data packages, and supplier qualification activities.
- Strong understanding of purchase order management, supplier lead times, inventory planning, lot traceability, cost analysis, and supplier performance.
- Ability to work cross-functionally with Engineering, Quality, Planning, Manufacturing, Stockroom, Finance, and suppliers.
- Strong Excel, Microsoft Office, data analysis, communication, follow-up, and problem-solving skills.
- APICS/ASCM, purchasing, supply chain, or related certification strongly preferred.
Work Conditions and Physical Requirements
- On-site office-based role within a manufacturing environment.
- Regular interaction with the production floor, stockroom, quality, engineering, planning, purchasing, and supplier teams.
- Requires extended periods of computer work, data review, ERP/MRP activity, supplier communication, and cross-functional coordination.
- May require standing, walking, bending, and occasional lifting up to 25 lbs.
- Up to 0-10% travel may be required for supplier visits, audits, or business needs.
Other duties, responsibilities and activities may change or be assigned at any time with or without notice as assigned by the Manager. The job description does not constitute a contract of employment, and the position remains at-will.
