Job Title: Off-Shift Nurse Manager

SUMMARY:

The Off-Shift Nurse Manager serves as an extension of unit leadership, providing visible nursing leadership during evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. This role is focused on staff engagement, quality outcomes, patient experience, and operational excellence—not solely crisis management.

Initially, this position will report directly to the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO), with the reporting structure to be evaluated after 6–9 months to ensure alignment with organizational needs and objectives.

The Off-Shift Nurse Manager serves as the visible nursing leader during evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays, ensuring excellence in patient care through clinical leadership, staff engagement, quality oversight, and operational partnership.

This role promotes a culture of accountability, professional practice, safety, and compassionate care while supporting frontline teams and collaborating closely with House Supervisors to ensure seamless hospital operations.

By strengthening staff retention, engagement, and quality outcomes, the Off-Shift Nurse Manager transforms after-hours leadership from a primarily reactive function into a proactive, strategic leadership presence—providing night and weekend staff with the same level of support, coaching, and engagement available during daytime operations.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Clinical & Nursing Leadership
  • Provides nursing leadership across assigned departments

  • Oversees the Nursing Support Services (NSS) team

  • Promotes accountability for nursing standards and professional practice

  • Supports complex clinical situations and escalations

  • Coaches and develops nursing staff and emerging leaders

Staff Engagement & Development
  • Conducts purposeful leadership rounding with staff

  • Provides real-time coaching, recognition, and performance feedback

  • Mentors charge nurses and future leaders

  • Addresses concerns proactively before they escalate

  • Assists with conflict resolution and team development

  • Reinforces organizational values and expected behaviors

Quality & Patient Safety
  • Reviews safety events, trends, and Safe Connect reports

  • Conducts patient safety rounds

  • Monitors falls, pressure injuries, medication safety, and infection prevention practices

  • Ensures compliance with regulatory and nursing standards

  • Follows up on near misses and identifies opportunities for improvement

  • Reinforces bedside shift report and other evidence-based practices

Patient Experience
  • Conducts patient and family rounding

  • Addresses service recovery concerns in real time

  • Reinforces compassionate care practices

  • Supports difficult patient and family conversations

  • Escalates concerns requiring additional leadership intervention

Operational Excellence
  • Partners with House Supervisors regarding staffing, capacity, and throughput

  • Supports admissions, transfers, and discharges when barriers arise

  • Monitors productivity and operational performance

  • Removes obstacles impacting patient care and team effectiveness

  • Collaborates with Unit Managers and the Director of Nursing Operations on department initiatives

Leadership & Organizational Support
  • Serves as the after-hours representative for nursing leadership

  • Communicates significant events and emerging concerns to nursing leaders and executives

  • Ensures appropriate handoff and follow-up to day-shift leadership

  • Participates in leadership huddles and organizational communication efforts

  • Reinforces organizational culture, engagement, and accountability

Continuous Improvement
  • Identifies opportunities to improve workflow, efficiency, and patient care delivery

  • Supports Lean and Performance Improvement initiatives

  • Audits compliance with nursing standards and operational expectations

  • Assists with implementation of new programs and initiatives

  • Collects frontline feedback to inform leadership decision-making

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BSN Required

  • NYS RN License

EDUCATION:

  • BS: Nursing (Required)

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: M - Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; Requires frequent walking, standing or squatting.

PAY RANGE: $95,000.00 - $140,000.00

The listed base pay range is a good faith representation of current potential base pay for successful applicants. It may be modified in the future. Pay is determined by factors including experience, clinical licensure date, relevant qualifications, specialty, internal equity, location, and contracts.
