COMMUNITY SERVICE AIDE
This position is accountable for, but not limited to: performing a full range of tasks to ensure that
program guidelines are followed and requirements are met. Community Service Aides must have the
knowledge and skills needed to perform various technical duties involved in community services
delivery, such as eligibility determinations for state, federal and local programs. Additionally, this
position may exceed the 35-hour week or command flexibility in hours based on holiday programs and
food drives. This position may be on call to respond to emergencies with Town departments and/or
residents.
Department: Community Services
Hours: 8:30am – 4:30pm, Monday – Friday; 35 hours, (flexible)
Location: Community Services, 91 Norton Street, Plantsville, CT
Grade/Rate: Grade 3/ $31.69 hourly
Union: United Public Service Employee Union Local 424-Unit 35
Reports to: Director of Community Services and/or designee
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Interviews individuals and family members to compile information on
consumers regarding food, child care, energy, state programs and financial,
etc.
• Assist families and individuals in completing Federal, State and local
applications
• Ensures client files are properly maintained
• Attends staff meetings and attends group meetings to provide and gather
information on agency services, requirements, and procedures
Pickups and drop offs both for the food pantry and the warehouse
Responsible for covering the reception desk
Supporting the food pantry operations
Greeting consumers and donors, assisting with various projects in the office
Minimum Qualifications:
• One year’s experience in the social services field
• Must be able to work in a high-paced environment and maintain
confidentiality
• To provide basic human needs with compassion and in a dignified
environment
• Valid Connecticut driver’s license required
Knowledge, Abilities and Experience:
Knowledge of relevant Federal and State programs and policies and
- procedures; interpersonal and customer service skills; dealing effectively and
- courteously with both the public and other agencies. This position needs to
- exercise tact, discretion and judgment in working with a variety of people.
- Essential to this role is the ability to maintain confidentiality and work in a
- professional manner. Assess client needs and recommend appropriate
- services. This position requires a level of skill with Microsoft Office word and
- excel programs and be able to enter data into statistical spreadsheets.
Physical Demands:
- This position will need to be able to lift and carry up to and including 40
- pounds. Employees need to be able to climb ladders within the food pantry.
- Also, this position commands individuals to bend, twist and reach items on
- shelving.

Evaluations: Performance to be evaluated annually by the Director of Community Services or
his/her designee.
