This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Substation Protection & Control Designer based in Canada.

This role offers the opportunity to contribute to critical high-voltage substation projects that support the reliability and modernization of electrical power systems. You will be involved in the detailed design of protection and control systems used in substations ranging from medium to extra-high voltage environments. Working closely with project leads and multidisciplinary engineering teams, you will help translate technical requirements into precise, high-quality design deliverables. The environment is highly technical, collaborative, and quality-driven, with a strong focus on continuous improvement and engineering excellence. You will play a key role in ensuring safe, efficient, and standards-compliant power infrastructure. This position is ideal for detail-oriented designers who enjoy solving complex electrical design challenges within large-scale utility projects such as those delivered by organizations like ICF International.

Accountabilities:

This role is responsible for delivering detailed protection and control design packages for high-voltage substation projects, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and alignment with engineering standards and client requirements.

  • Develop and prepare protection and control design drawings, including relay one-lines and three-lines, AC/DC schematics, panel layouts, wiring diagrams, and SCADA/communication diagrams.
  • Produce point-to-point wiring diagrams and cable schedules to support accurate system implementation.
  • Coordinate with physical design, relay settings, and drafting teams to ensure integrated and high-quality deliverables.
  • Interpret and incorporate vendor documentation and technical inputs into engineering design packages.
  • Apply client-specific standards and industry codes while ensuring compliance with QA/QC processes.
  • Support continuous improvement by enhancing technical knowledge, design practices, and engineering performance.
Requirements

The ideal candidate brings hands-on substation design experience, strong technical drafting capabilities, and familiarity with high-voltage utility environments.

  • 3+ years of detailed substation protection & control design experience, including wiring diagrams, schematics, and relay panel layouts.
  • Experience working with design tools such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, Bluebeam, or Inventor.
  • Strong understanding of AC/DC control circuits and point-to-point wiring design principles.
  • Ability to interpret engineering standards and apply them in design work (NEC, NESC, IEEE, ANSI).
  • Experience collaborating with engineers to translate requirements into technical design outputs.
  • Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and documentation quality.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills in a multidisciplinary engineering environment.
  • Diploma or equivalent technical education in electrical or related engineering discipline.
Benefits
  • Fully remote position (Ontario-based candidates only)
  • Competitive compensation aligned with experience
  • Flexible work arrangements supporting work-life balance
  • Professional development and tuition reimbursement programs
  • Retirement savings plan with employer matching
  • Employee stock purchase program
  • Paid volunteer time and charitable donation matching
  • Access to continuous learning and technical development resources
  • Collaborative, high-impact engineering environment focused on utility innovation.
