Description:

The Environmental Specialist is a hands-on leader with a primary focus on environmental program management, assessing and leading environmental risk mitigation and supporting the plant in environmental management.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Ensuring compliance with EPA and SC DHEC regulations
  • Define, manage, analyze, and improve facility environmental processes in accord with Halocarbons EHS/PSM vision, strategy, and regulatory compliance.
  • Develop and maintain a multi-year environmental and safety plan that incorporates risk identification, current and needed risk control measures. Plans must include current and future risks and opportunities to mitigate impact to the environment that are applicable to Halocarbon’s operation.
  • Provide leadership in assuring that Halocarbon meets all government agency’s requirements related to environmental compliance, emergency response, employee safety and health.
  • Serve as a change agent to stimulate culture changes which drive the company towards minimizing exposures leading to zero injuries, illnesses, or adverse impacts to the environment.
  • Using a risk management approach, initiate engineering, administrative, and controls to meet Halocarbon’s EHS vision / values.
  • Serve as a role model by modeling, health, safety (EHS) excellence through participation in and compliance with Halocarbon policies, management systems, procedures, teams, and training.
  • Participate in the on-call rotations and provide afterhours assistance or emergency response.

The Environmental Specialist must be a caring, highly motivated, ambitious individual, with strong analytical skills. This person should be a team-oriented leader, curious with an investigative mindset, able to effectively collaborate, and communicate with their audiences. The individual must show care for employees and the plant by upholding a culture of strong discipline and attention to details.

Requirements:

Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, environmental engineering, environmental science, or other related scientific discipline is preferred, or equivalent experience.
  • Professional Engineer (PE), Certified Environmental Professional (CEP), or Certified Hazardous Material Manager (CHMM) and SC Water Operator (Level B) certifications are a plus.
  • Proficiency in interpreting and applying environmental regulations and industry standards.
  • A demonstrated track record of and experience in change leadership, risk assessment/risk management, leading EHS management systems, and maintaining technical competence is a plus.

  • Advanced MS Office skills and ability to quickly learn and apply new software.

Safety/Essential Functions

  • Must be able to climb and descend stairs and ladders.
  • Must be capable of and willing to learn, new skills and tasks.
  • Must be capable of working where chemical odors may exist at permissible threshold limits of exposure.
  • Must be able to evacuate the plant and report to muster point in the event of an emergency or drill.
  • Must be able to sit and use a computer for extended periods of time.
