About the Role

The Assistant Technical Director (ATD) supports the Technical Director in managing and executing the technical needs of productions presented by the Dance and Theatre programs at Westminster University. This includes overseeing student technicians, assisting with production planning, maintaining theatre facilities, and ensuring the safety and functionality of technical equipment. The ATD plays a hands-on role in technical rehearsals, performances, and facility maintenance. The position requires flexible availability, including evening and weekend work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate's degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

  • Proven administrative or assistant-level experience.

  • Strong time management skills with the ability to multitask and prioritize responsibilities.

  • Experience in performing arts event planning and management.

  • High attention to detail and accuracy.

  • Ability to work independently and take initiative.

  • Proficiency in using power tools.

  • Working knowledge of audiovisual systems and technical needs in performing arts venues.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in secondary or higher education settings.

  • Expertise in one or more of the following areas:

    • Live or recorded audio engineering

    • Scenic construction (wood or metalworking)

    • Theatrical lighting and rigging

    • Theatrical props design or management

    • Drafting or digital design (e.g., Vectorworks, AutoCAD)

    • Scenic painting

    • 3D printing and/or CNC routing

ResponsibilitiesSupervision
  • Hire, schedule, and supervise student venue technicians.

  • Assign and oversee student technician work, ensuring productivity and quality.

  • Track student employee hours and manage student employment budget allocations.

Production Planning and Execution
  • Collaborate with production teams in planning and executing technical elements of performances.

  • Attend production meetings, technical rehearsals, and performances as assigned.

  • Coordinate with the Director of Music Technology and Music Production Coordinator on technical needs for music events.

Resource Management
  • Support the Technical Director in assigning student employee tasks and creating work schedules.

  • Assist with seasonal planning and evaluating technical resource capacity.

  • Aid in tracking departmental production budgets.

Facility and Equipment Maintenance
  • Assist in the upkeep of performance and rehearsal spaces, including the Dumke Student Theatre, Courage Theatre, and Sorenson-Fenton Rehearsal Studio.

  • Maintain equipment related to staging, rigging, lighting, audio, and general production.

  • Monitor and ensure proper functioning of all shop and technical equipment.

Shop Safety
  • Instruct student crews on safety procedures and proper use of tools and equipment.

  • Maintain a clean and safe working environment.

  • Report any hazardous conditions or maintenance concerns to the Technical Director.

Skills
  • Strong leadership and team management, particularly with student employees.

  • Excellent organizational, planning, and prioritization skills.

  • Technical proficiency in lighting, sound, rigging, and scenic construction.

  • Skilled with power tools and basic shop equipment.

  • Knowledge of performing arts technologies and venue operations.

  • Capable of troubleshooting technical issues quickly and effectively.

  • Clear and effective communicator with technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Comfortable lifting up to 25 lbs and working during evenings and weekends as production schedules require.
