SCHEDULE - Full-time, On-site
Includes weekends and holidays as needed. Schedule subject to change to meet the needs of shelter operations.

ABOUT GATEWAY WEST
Gateway West is Albuquerque’s largest shelter, serving an average of 600 people per night, with cold winter nights bringing in more than 700 people, offering a safe and welcoming environment to people experiencing homelessness. The center is open year-round, offering meals, a warm overnight bed, and secure under-bed storage. Shuttle service is provided daily. The team provides easy access to trauma-informed services such as case management, job searching, and other supportive services. The team's goal is to guide guests through a successful exit from the shelter to safe, stable housing and a plan for ongoing support.

ABOUT THE ROLE
The Shelter Dorm Monitor is responsible for maintaining a safe, clean, and supportive environment within the shelter dormitory. This role involves overseeing resident activities, ensuring compliance with shelter policies, and providing support to individuals experiencing homelessness. The Dorm Monitor is key to building daily community and respect among residents, helping them navigate their challenges and work towards stability and recovery.

QUALITIES THAT MAKE A GREAT DORM MONITOR:

  • Compassionate and non-judgmental attitude towards individuals experiencing homelessness
  • Understanding of homelessness issues and familiarity with available community resources
  • Committed to trauma informed-care practices that promote safety, empowerment and healing, always recognizing the impact of trauma on an individual’s experiences and behaviors
  • Skilled at remaining calm and professional in stressful situations, including de-escalation and conflict mediation
  • Models accountability, integrity, and professionalism in their interactions with teammates, leadership, community partners, and most importantly, with shelter residents

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma/GED or equivalent experience; experience in social services or related fields preferred
  • Prior experience working in a shelter, community organization, or social service setting is a plus
  • Basic computer skills for record-keeping and reporting
  • For driving roles: have a valid drivers license & CDL (not all dorm monitors drive and that will be discussed during the interview to determine if candidate is comfortable and qualified to be part of that rotation)
