About This Position

Under general supervision, oversee, administer, perform, and undertake a variety of tasks associated with the Town Court safety and security.
- Conducts safety and security checks, including extensive hand searches and personal property searches.
- Operates screening equipment such as an x-ray machine, walk-through metal detector, and hand wand.
- Assists the Court Security Manager with the implementation of safety, security, and evacuation plans and procedures within the court facility.
- Maintains order by patrolling the courtroom and throughout the courthouse facility.
- Maintains chain of custody concerning confiscated weapons or contraband entering the courthouse.
- Coordinates the scheduling of appointments with defendants to complete their court-ordered fingerprinting.
- Fingerprints defendants for the Oro Valley Town Court and processes disposition reports.
- Detains individuals as needed until law enforcement arrive.
- Escorts and guides visitors and others having business in the Court to the requested courtroom/location.
- Prepares and submits reports on security incidents.
- Patrols the exterior perimeters, checks windows, doors and other actual or potential access to the court and identifies safety or security concerns.
- Patrols the interior perimeter hallways, corridors, courtrooms and other areas for unauthorized persons and packages.
- Maintains a visible presence to deter disturbances and assist the public throughout the court facility.
- Responds to medical emergencies and renders first aid and CPR as a first responder.
- Supports the town’s policies, goals and objectives and works with management and other staff to ethically achieve such goals and objectives and ensures compliance with safety procedures.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in written communication with judges, court personnel, court security, and the diverse individuals and groups who visit court facilities.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and customer service skills.
- Ability to operate standard office equipment.
- Ability to organize work, set priorities, meet critical deadlines, and follow up on work assignments with minimal supervision.
- Knowledge of defensive tactics and application of non-lethal weapons for controlling volatile situations.
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of law enforcement, methods, and techniques for providing safety and security services.
- Knowledge of safe and lawful handling of defensive weapons.
- Knowledge of Town and Department policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of Town, County, Arizona Supreme Court, State and Federal statutes, rules, ordinances, codes, administrative orders, case law and other relevant directives.
- Knowledge of trends and practices in safety and security.
- Skill in court security procedures including use of x-ray machine and metal detectors.
- Skill in making good observations, recalling facts, and maintaining a security awareness of the courthouse.
- Skill in the use of Microsoft Office suite.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
- A high school diploma or GED.
- One (1) year experience in court security, law enforcement, jail or prison security, military, or other closely related experience.
- Completion of Court Security Officer Academy within first twelve (12) months of hire.
- Must be able to acquire first aid and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification.
- Complete annual training as required by the Committee on Judicial Education and Training (COJET).
- Must possess a valid Class D Arizona driver license upon the first day of employment.
- Must successfully complete a background screening and fingerprinting prior to beginning employment pursuant to the Arizona Code of Judicial Administration 5-303(E)(2).
- Successfully pass drug testing for illegal substances pursuant to the Arizona Code of Judicial Administration 5-303(I)(1)(a).
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Work is performed in an indoor and outdoor environment.
- May be exposed to potential physical harm, hazardous chemicals and/or infectious diseases.
- Must be able to sit or stand for prolonged periods of time, have vision acuity (near and far) for security observation, color vision for security functions.
- Touch/finger dexterity for searching bags, etc.
- Work requires good physical strength and condition to apply restraining techniques, defensive tactics, react to physical confrontations and emergency situations.
- May be required to perform a full range of motion with lifting and/or carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Regular attendance is an essential function for this position.
