The Director of Health Information Management oversees the organization and management of health information systems in a way that ensures compliance, efficiency, and the safeguarding of patient data. This role involves strategic planning and collaboration with various departments to ensure that medical, legal, and ethical standards in handling patient information are met. By focusing on the accurate and secure processing of health information, the Director ensures that healthcare providers can access and utilize data effectively to improve patient care. Leads the coding and billing process, ensuring accuracy and compliance with medical coding guidelines and insurance requirements. This position also plays a significant role in the development and implementation of policies and procedures that support the organization’s goals, while adapting to the evolving landscape of healthcare regulations and technology advancements. The ideal candidate will understand the complexities of managing health information systems and revenue cycle initiatives, leading teams within the acute and ambulatory healthcare settings.

Director Of Health Information Management Job Duties

1. Oversees the management and security of patient health information, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. To include ensuring Govt Data submissions and responses are submitted.

2. Develops and implement policies and procedures for the Health Information Management (HIM) department to ensure efficient operations and high-quality service.

3. Manages the selection, training, and evaluation of HIM staff, fostering a collaborative and productive work environment.

4. Collaborates with IT department to oversee the implementation and maintenance of technology related to Health Information and Patient Accounts systems, to include third party applications, clearinghouse and Practice Management and Clinical health record; ensuring system reliability and accessibility for authorized personnel.

5. Leads the coding and billing process, ensuring accuracy and compliance with medical coding guidelines and insurance requirements, to include data analytics and process improvement.

6. Oversees the management of release of information requests

7. Responds to an initiates, tracks and analyzes audits

8. Facilitates communication between healthcare providers, patients, and insurance companies to resolve any discrepancies or issues related to health records and billing.

9. Conducts regular audits of health information management processes to identify areas for improvement and ensure compliance with changing healthcare laws and regulations.

10. Represents the HIM department in interdisciplinary committees within the healthcare facility, contributing to policy development and strategic planning initiatives.

11. Leads quality and process improvement initiatives and projects

12. Collaborates with other health care professionals to improve patient outcomes through the use of health information

13. Education: Director of Health Information Management will have strong educational foundation in health informatics, health information management and revenue cycle. (Degree – preferred or required?) in management, healthcare administration, or related fields.

Experience:

Experience with medical terminology, audit principles, data management, healthcare privacy laws, and information technology with 5 years previous experience in healthcare management and information systems. The candidate will have a blend of technical and managerial skills, with a focus on overseeing health information systems, ensuring data accuracy, and leading teams effectively. Continuous professional development and adaptability to evolving healthcare technologies and regulations are crucial.

Certifications & Licenses: Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) through the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), Certified Professional in Healthcare Information and Management Systems (CPHIMS) or Certified Health Data Analyst (CHDA) certifications desired.
