Job Overview: The Director of Production oversees all aspects of the New York City Center production department operations including the design, budget, technical elements, personnel, schedules, and logistics for all Mainstage productions. This position is a strategic leader, problem solver, and liaison between administrative, artistic, and production, while supporting City Center’s mission and commitment to being an anti-racist organization.

Responsibilities:

• Serve as a critical liaison between administrative, artistic, and building personnel in the planning and execution of all mainstage and studio programming.
• Lead the production process for all City Center programming with a thoughtful, calm and collaborative approach.
• Partner with Artistic Directors, Directors, Choreographers and Designers to execute their artistic vision within the given time and budgetary constraints.
• Partner with General Manager and Artistic teams on season planning including the preparation of budgets, labor estimates and schedules for City Center programming.
• Responsible for unionized labor and design budgets for all City Center productions.
• Support the General Manager on the annual budgeting process and reforecasting throughout each fiscal year.
• Facilitate the Production department's work in preparing all production calendars, schedules, staffing needs, design deadlines and assignments for all City Center productions.
• Ensure the successful transition from advance planning to project execution with the Production Manager.
• Advise and participate in the hiring of freelance production personnel as required.
• Supervise and manage the Production department and the delegation of work responsibilities.
• Supervise union stagehands, teamsters, wardrobe, hair/make-up, and other technical workers.
• Oversee and process weekly payroll for all unionized employees as prepared by the Production Manager. Responsible for accuracy and budget compliance. Ensure that other team members are trained on processing payroll as a backup.
• Partner with the Director of Rentals on rental labor estimates and overall feasibility of rental engagements.
• Interface and collaborate with other City Center departments in providing production advice, budget planning, and schedule guidance.
• Lead the annual Production departmental maintenance process including budgets, timelines, and recommendations.
• Oversee the Technical Director in preparing budgets for ongoing maintenance, future improvement, and acquisition while building structures, facilities, and equipment.
• Oversee the enforcement, compliance, and permits for all Fire, Health, and Safety matters as it relates to stage activities for City Center venues and productions in coordination with the Director of Security and Safety, Venue Operations and Facilities Departments.
• Ensure a safe work environment for stagehands and artists. Seek third party consultation or engineering for specialty rigging, flying, automation and other special effects or unique projects.
• Partner with the Director of Security and Safety to establish employee training and certification programs.
• Advise the VP & COO and General Manager in union contract matters related to negotiations for all applicable union CBAs entered into by New York City Center.
• Advise the VP & COO on capital planning and projects related to production operations.
• Lead capital projects as assigned or partner with owner’s reps for capital projects implementation.
• Manage, input, and maintain the production aspects of City Center’s venue Management Database, Diese.
• Foster a work environment that is supportive, collegial, respectful, and open to differing perspectives and opinions. Cultivate a departmental environment that is flexible to organizational needs outside of production operations for activities such as building tours, development tours, marketing/press filming/photography and educational initiatives.
• Must obtain the following FDNY certifications within 3 months of hire:
  • F03 Fireguard for Indoor Place of Public Assembly
  • C15 Certificate of Fitness Flame Retardant Treatment
• Obtain OSHA 30 Construction certification within 3 months of hire.
• Other duties as reasonably assigned.

Required Experience and Qualifications:

• Ten years of production management and technical experience in theatre and/or dance
• Ability to lift 35 lbs.
• Proficient with Excel, MS Office Suite, Production and Venue Management Software, and Paychex payroll software.
• Proficient with Vectorworks and Filemaker Pro.
• Experience with IATSE Local 1, USA, Teamsters, 764, 798 or similar union agreements.
• Previous experience in production management, stage management, and/or arts administration.
• Excellent organizational and communication skills.
• Flexibility and a "team player" sensibility.
