About This Position

Position Description: City Dispatcher LTL Pick-Up and Delivery (P&D) The City Dispatcher is charged with delivering the most reliable and efficient Pick-Up and Delivery (P&D) service to both internal and external customers across the Chicagoland and Tristate market. This role is central to daily LTL execution and requires strong situational judgment, disciplined communication, and the ability to proactively manage operational risk in a high-volume environment.
This is a full-time, regular, on-site position, five days per week, covering shifts occurring between the hours of 0600-2200, with occasional weekend work based on operational needs. The role supports and coordinates 70+ city drivers and interfaces closely with dock operations, customer service, and leadership.
Responsibilities
  • Coordinate and dispatch daily LTL Pick-Up and Delivery operations in alignment with service commitments, safety standards, and operational priorities.
  • Maintain adherence to DOT, OSHA, and company standards while overseeing city operations.
  • Plan and dispatch driver assignments based on real-time operational conditions, volume fluctuations, staffing, and service requirements.
  • Serve as a central communication point for 70+ drivers, dock operations, and internal stakeholders, ensuring clear two-way information flow.
  • Partner closely with dock operations to align freight availability, loading priorities, and route execution.
  • Identify potential service, capacity, or safety challenges in advance and take timely action to mitigate risk.
  • Support appointment scheduling during peak operating periods as needed.
  • Complete post-shift reporting, including service performance, exceptions, and operational issues.
  • Actively participate in process improvement initiatives, operational reviews, and basic data analysis.
  • Collaborate with dispatch peers and leadership to ensure work is completed within prescribed timelines.
QualificationsEducation
  • High School diploma or GED required. College coursework, junior college, or four-year degree preferred but not required.

Experience

  • 25 years of transportation or dispatch experience, with LTL Pick-Up and Delivery strongly preferred.
  • Experience dispatching or directly supporting CDL A drivers.
  • Working knowledge of Chicagoland and Tristate geography.
Technical and Professional Skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word).
  • Strong interpersonal and professional communication skills, including frequent phone-based interaction.
  • Ability to prioritize competing operational needs in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to accept coaching, adapt quickly, and apply feedback.
  • Effective conflict resolution skills.
  • Calm, decisive, and solutions-oriented under pressure.
