Day in the Life?

From preventative maintenance on heavy machinery to the construction of unique park features, projects can vary by week, month or season. As a smaller, self-sufficient team, summers may be spent out in the parks constructing a new shelter and pouring decorative concrete while winters may be spent indoors remodeling a kitchen, bathroom or performing custom metal work. Each day is unique and creativity in design is encouraged.

Job Summary

Complete a broad spectrum of mechanical work and construction projects to ensure the highest level of visitor satisfaction and stewardship of Metroparks resources, infrastructure and equipment.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan work projects to stay within established budget and time constraints; provide input on project scope and design; procure materials and supplies and track costs associated with projects.
  • Perform a variety of high-level new construction and complex carpentry projects.
  • Perform a variety of general building maintenance activities; plumbing, painting, dry wall, roofing, minor electrical, and masonry.
  • Perform required landscaping activities; plant flowers, shrubs, and trees, etc.
  • Implement procedures, techniques and best practices in the maintenance of facilities and equipment in park operations.
  • Operate and maintain heavy equipment including dump trucks, excavators, backhoes, aerial lifts, and telehandlers; assure compliance with all related safety regulations.
  • Understand and comply with PERRP, OSHA, and ODA requirements.
  • Carry out the District’s mission, strategic plan and operating principles to promote the success of the organization.
  • Maintain assigned equipment to manufacturer’s specifications and Metropark operating standards.
  • Complete all required reports and maintenance logs.
  • Actively seek opportunities for innovation and improvement within job role.
  • Work effectively with others assigned to projects; effectively communicate with contractors to coordinate and direct work.
  • Effectively follow directions and adjust assignments as needed.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on equipment; make repairs, and maintain records.
  • Purchase materials needed to complete assigned project.
  • Assist with general grounds maintenance activities such as snow removal and storm cleanup as needed.
  • Direct the work of seasonal and volunteer staff.
  • Facilitate transfer of project-related skills to park staff.
  • Other Park District work related duties as assigned.

Equipment Used

Park vehicles as assigned; Manual and power driven equipment such as lawn mowers, chain saws, power hand tools; snow removal equipment, utility vehicles, trucks, light and medium-duty tractors, truck/trailer combinations, backhoe, skid steer, chemical dispensing systems, etc.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Schedule: 40 hour work-week that may require work in the evenings, weekends, and/or holidays when needed to accomplish goals
  • Home Work Location: Side Cut
  • Requires regular lifting and carrying of up to 40 pounds and occasional lifting up to 60 pounds; ability to walk and work outdoors for extended periods of time in all types of weather including extreme heat and cold.
Requirements:

Job Requirements

  1. Must be 18 years of age and possess a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  2. Education: High School Diploma or GED
  3. Experience: Minimum of 3 years’ construction and/or skilled trades’ experience
  4. Certifications: Must obtain the following certifications and fulfill requalification and recertification requirements: (Internal Candidates: Certifications already achieved, preferred).
  • First Aid/CPR – within 6 months
  • Class A CDL – within 1 year
  • OSHA 30-hour Construction certification – within 6 months
  • Aerial Lift Operator Safety Certification – within 6 months

Alternates to the position requirements may be made as Metroparks finds appropriate and acceptable.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated appreciation for enhancing quality of life and conserving the region’s natural resources through clean, safe and natural parks and open spaces.
  • Broad, in-depth maintenance and mechanical skills; demonstrated ability to maintain and repair equipment.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in maintenance specialty areas: rough and finish carpentry, plumbing, painting and staining, concrete, masonry, welding, roofing, and minor electrical.
  • Ability to operate, maintain and troubleshoot all types of equipment including power tools and heavy equipment.
  • Understanding of maintenance-related safety regulations.
  • Advanced construction-related math skills.
  • Problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Broad, general understanding of flora, fauna and wildlife of the area.
  • Ability to communicate to the public in an articulate and intelligent manner.
  • Must be able to work independently without supervision.
  • Ability to effectively coordinate work projects and work teams.
  • Ability to read and understand directions, work orders and MSDS sheets.
  • Interpersonal skills; demonstrated ability to work with all types of people including volunteers, staff, and the public.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to read and comprehend engineer/architectural drawings and plan sets.
  • Ability to operate and interpret surveying equipment.
  • Ability to be flexible and adaptive to changing priorities.
