At RWJBarnabas Health, our Infusion Center Registered Nurses provide specialized, compassionate care to patients and families throughout their cancer treatment journey. As an On-Call Infusion RN at the Melchiorre Cancer Center, you'll combine advanced oncology nursing skills with patient education, clinical assessment, and individualized support for patients receiving chemotherapy and other complex treatments. Working closely with physicians and a multidisciplinary cancer care team, you'll help patients safely navigate treatment while addressing their physical, emotional, nutritional, and rehabilitation needs. This is an opportunity to use your nursing expertise in an environment where clinical excellence and meaningful patient relationships are equally important.

As an Infusion Center Registered Nurse (RN), a typical day may include:
  • Performing comprehensive assessments and reassessments for patients with hematologic and oncologic conditions while developing individualized plans of care

  • Safely administering and monitoring chemotherapy and biotherapy according to established policies, procedures, and oncology nursing standards

  • Caring for patients with complex hematology and oncology needs, including chemotherapy treatment, sickle cell crisis, fever, neutropenia, and acute or chronic pain

  • Initiating, maintaining, and monitoring peripheral and implanted vascular access devices while performing central line flushing, blood draws, and dressing changes

  • Recognizing hematologic and oncologic emergencies, medication extravasation, adverse treatment reactions, and changes in patient condition and initiating appropriate interventions

  • Administering blood and blood products in accordance with established safety standards and organizational policies

  • Providing individualized education to patients and families regarding chemotherapy, treatment plans, medications, side effects, symptom management, and ongoing care needs

  • Supporting patients and families through the emotional impact of cancer diagnosis and treatment while connecting them with additional resources when appropriate

  • Collaborating with physicians, nurses, social services, discharge planners, and other multidisciplinary partners to coordinate treatment and continuity of care

  • Integrating patients' physical, psychosocial, nutritional, developmental, pain-management, and rehabilitation needs into nursing care and discharge planning

  • Maintaining accurate clinical documentation, medication reconciliation, and communication of significant patient information to appropriate members of the healthcare team

  • Assuming Charge Nurse responsibilities when delegated, including evaluating staffing needs and coordinating assignments based on patient acuity and team competencies

This role might be for you if:
  • You are passionate about oncology nursing and want to support patients and families throughout complex cancer treatments

  • You have strong assessment skills and can quickly recognize changes in condition, treatment reactions, and oncology-related emergencies

  • You are comfortable managing IV therapy, central lines, implanted access devices, chemotherapy, and other specialized oncology treatments

  • You enjoy developing meaningful relationships with patients who may return regularly for ongoing treatment and supportive care

  • You communicate complex treatment information in a way that helps patients and families feel informed and prepared

  • You understand the importance of addressing emotional, physical, nutritional, developmental, and psychosocial needs as part of comprehensive cancer care

  • You thrive in a multidisciplinary environment and communicate effectively with physicians and other members of the cancer care team

  • You are organized, attentive to detail, and committed to medication safety, infection prevention, and evidence-based oncology nursing practice

  • You are comfortable stepping into additional clinical leadership responsibilities when needed to support safe and efficient Infusion Center operations

To be considered for this Infusion Center Registered Nurse opportunity, you must be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing and hold an active New Jersey Registered Nurse (RN) license. A Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), or current matriculation toward a baccalaureate nursing degree, is preferred. BLS certification is required or must be obtained within 90 days of hire to the unit. Candidates must also hold IV certification from an approved facility or complete the requirements for IV certification within 90 days of hire. Registered Nurses administering chemotherapy must obtain and maintain Chemotherapy Biotherapy Certification through the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS). Nurses providing oncology care who do not hold Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) certification are required to complete a minimum of 12 oncology-specific continuing education credits annually in accordance with Commission on Cancer accreditation guidelines. Candidates must also complete all required organizational and unit orientation requirements. This is an hourly, day shift On-Call Option 7 opportunity supporting The Infusion Center at the Melchiorre Cancer Center.
