Facility Administrator – Corrections in Minneapolis, Minnesota at Hennepin County

The Juvenile Detention Center (JDC) is seeking a Facility Administrator – Corrections to help lead a mission-driven team serving youth awaiting court outcomes. As a licensed Minnesota Department of Corrections facility, the JDC plays a critical role in providing safe, supportive, and culturally responsive services for residents ages 10 to 18+. This leadership position offers the opportunity to shape policies, guide staff, and make a meaningful impact on youth and the broader Hennepin County community.

Location and hours:
This position is located at the JDC at 510 Park Ave South, Minneapolis, MN 55415. Work hours will typically be Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. with evening and weekend on call responsibilities.

About this position:

In this position, you will:

• Establish and modify correctional division policies and procedures to be consistent with departmental, county, and state regulations.
• Make periodic evaluation of staff performance and operating units and take or recommend appropriate action.
• Provide leadership to managers in hiring, motivating, and/or training of correctional division staff and participate in succession planning, as appropriate.
• Assist with the preparation and administration of the division budget.
• Address complaints from clients, residents, staff, community agencies, and the general public in coordinating efforts for resolution with the Professional Standards and Conduct Unit.
• Develop objectives, standards, and controls necessary for administration of division programs and services at the JDC.
• Recognize and respect cultural differences and provide culturally appropriate services.

Need to have:

• One of the following:
  • Nine years or more of experience in corrections, two of which must have been in administration or supervision.
  • Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, behavioral/social science, or business, correctional, or public administration or equivalent and five years or more of the experience in corrections, two of which must have been in administration or supervision.
  • Master's degree or higher in criminal justice, behavioral/social science, or business, correctional, or public administration or equivalent and four years or more of experience in corrections.

  • Supervising teams that work with juvenile populations in corrections, law, safety, or justice settings.
  • In a correctional setting leading inclusion and culture change efforts to eliminate inequities and disparities.
  • Working collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Applying diversity, equity, and inclusion best practices in collaboration with staff, partners, and those we serve.
• Knowledge of evidence-based practices for effective correctional use.
• Knowledge of laws and regulations affecting correctional facility licensure.
• Understanding of political environments and government work; confident decision-making skills and the ability to balance responsiveness to concerns with the perseverance to lead in a political environment.
• Have a valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver's permit.

Under Minn. Stat. 144.445, subd. 2, an applicant or employee commissioned at the Hennepin County correctional facilities (Juvenile Detention Center and Adult Corrections Facility) are required to undergo tuberculosis (TB) testing. Upon conditional job offer, candidates will be required to complete pre-employment testing onsite in Minneapolis, MN.

Under facility licensing requirements, positions at the Juvenile Detention Center are also required to undergo a Department of Human Services Background Study (MS 245C.13). Convictions for certain crimes will have an effect on your ability to be hired according to the disqualification schedule listed in Minnesota Statute 245C.15. Individuals convicted for any level of Criminal Sexual Conduct are disqualified from being hired into any position within the DOCCR under the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA). Other past involvement with the criminal court system will not automatically disqualify you from working at the DOCCR; individual circumstances are reviewed and evaluated confidentially.
