Description:

Boater’s World Manufacturing Group is seeking an experienced Mold Maintenance Technician to join our manufacturing operation in Chocowinity, North Carolina.

The Mold Maintenance Technician is responsible for inspecting, maintaining, repairing, and preparing fiberglass/composite production molds used throughout the boat manufacturing process. This position plays an important role in maintaining mold condition, surface quality, dimensional integrity, and production readiness to help ensure consistent finished-product quality.

The ideal candidate has experience with fiberglass, composites, gelcoat, mold repair, tooling, or similar hands-on manufacturing work. Previous boat manufacturing experience is preferred but not required for candidates with strong transferable composites or mold-maintenance experience.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Inspect production molds for cracks, chips, scratches, surface defects, wear, and other damage
  • Perform routine mold maintenance and preventive maintenance to keep tooling production-ready
  • Repair damaged fiberglass and composite mold surfaces using appropriate materials and techniques
  • Sand, grind, fill, buff, polish, and refinish mold surfaces as required
  • Perform gelcoat and surface repairs to restore molds to established quality standards
  • Prepare molds for production, including cleaning, polishing, and application of appropriate mold-release materials
  • Identify mold defects that could affect finished-part appearance, fit, or quality
  • Troubleshoot recurring mold and tooling issues and communicate concerns to supervisors and appropriate production teams
  • Assist with mold modifications and tooling repairs as assigned
  • Verify completed repairs before molds are returned to production
  • Coordinate with Gelcoat, Lamination, Quality, Engineering, and other production teams to address mold-related concerns
  • Maintain tools, equipment, materials, and work areas in a clean and organized condition
  • Follow established procedures for handling resins, gelcoat, solvents, adhesives, and other manufacturing materials
  • Follow all company quality, environmental, health, and safety requirements
  • Perform additional mold maintenance, tooling, and production-support duties as assigned
Requirements:
  • Hands-on experience with fiberglass, composites, mold maintenance, tooling, gelcoat repair, surface finishing, or a related manufacturing process
  • Experience using grinders, sanders, buffers, polishers, drills, and other hand and power tools
  • Ability to identify surface defects and determine appropriate repair methods
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality surfaces
  • Ability to follow work instructions, specifications, and established repair procedures
  • Ability to work independently while coordinating effectively with production teams
  • Dependable attendance and ability to work a consistent manufacturing schedule
  • Ability to follow all safety procedures and properly use required personal protective equipment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous mold maintenance or tooling experience in boat or marine manufacturing
  • Fiberglass/composite mold repair experience
  • Experience with gelcoat application, repair, color matching, sanding, buffing, and polishing
  • Experience working with production molds used in fiberglass or composite manufacturing
  • Boat, marine, automotive, RV, aerospace, or other composites manufacturing experience
  • Experience performing preventive maintenance on molds and production tooling

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • Work is performed in an active boat manufacturing environment
  • Regular exposure to fiberglass/composite materials, dust, resins, gelcoat, chemicals, odors, noise, tools, equipment, and varying temperatures
  • Ability to stand and work for extended periods
  • Ability to bend, kneel, reach, climb, and work around large molds and tooling
  • Ability to safely use grinders, sanders, buffers, polishers, and other required tools
  • Ability to lift, carry, position, and move materials and equipment as required by the position
  • Must wear required PPE and follow all facility safety procedures, including applicable respiratory-protection requirements
