Job Title: Assistant Director of Digital Media and Partnerships
Grade: MGT F
Annual Salary: $135,609.02
Location: Washington, DC, HQ based

Organizational Overview: We are the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), a union of about 2 million diverse members in healthcare, the public sector, and property services. We believe in and fight for our Vision for a Just Society: where all workers are valued and all people respected, no matter where we come from or what color we are; where all families and communities can thrive; and where we leave a better and more equitable world for generations to come. We are an anti-racist union determined to check corporate power and uproot structural racism through unions, worker power, collective action, and government, legislative, and political action. We fight for Unions for All and a Government that Works for All so that all of us, across race and place, can have power together in unions and participate fully in our democracy.

Purpose: The Assistant Director of Digital Media and Partnerships serves as a foundationally digital communications professional responsible for expanding SEIU’s reach through modern digital ecosystems and strategic external collaborations. This role leads the union's digital influencer strategy and oversees the production of high-impact social and advertising content to build political power and shift national narratives.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Digital Influencer & Partnership Leadership: Serves as the primary lead for all digital influencer collaborations, identifying and cultivating relationships with culturally influential communities and values-aligned digital creators to expand the union's narrative reach.
  • Social & Creative Oversight: Manages a junior staffer dedicated to creating high-volume social media content and creative assets for digital ads across national SEIU channels, ensuring all content centers worker voices and race-class narrative analysis.
  • Hands-On Content Creation: In addition to strategic oversight, this role is responsible for the direct production of high-impact digital assets, including the design of custom graphics, short-form video editing, and the development of comprehensive digital toolkits for national mobilizations.
  • Paid Media Management: Supervises a Program Manager responsible for the execution of digital advertising programs, ensuring paid media efforts are integrated with broader organizational goals and campaign priorities.
  • Vendor & Contract Management: Manages and coordinates major digital contracts and vendor relationships; ensures sophisticated choices are made regarding advertising agencies, design firms, and consultants to deliver high-quality, cost-effective results.
  • Strategic Integration: Partners with the Deputy Director of Strategic Outreach to ensure digital partnerships and ad content are synchronized with media relations, pitching, and the "Unions for All" roadmap.
  • Innovation & Standards: Ensures the digital work of the union is innovative, helping to exceed industry standards through the implementation of new platforms, workflows, and data-informed decision-making.
  • Budget Oversight: Assists in developing and managing the digital advertising and creator budget, ensuring strategic and responsible resource allocation aligned with SEIU’s values.
  • Contacts: Must be able to represent the International Union with local leaders, members, staff, and outside organizations utilizing independent judgment and the highest level of professionalism.
    • Internal: International senior staff and local union communicators.
    • External: Digital influencers, cultural leaders, politicians, and staff of partner organizations.
    • Vendors: Advertising agencies and digital creator consultants

Direction and Decision Making:

  • Reports to the Deputy Director of Strategic Outreach and works with significant independence.
  • Must be able to manage own work and the work of a staff team (Program Manager and Junior Staffer) without constant supervision.
  • Requires a high level of judgment and discretion in resolving problems and handling confidential SEIU affairs.

Experience: Experience in communications or technology-related field preferred; six or more years of experience in digital communications, including at least four (4) years managing strategy and program development.

Essential Experience:

  • Thorough knowledge of digital campaign strategies, including social media, digital ads, CRMs, and CMSs.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing complex vendor relationships and large-scale digital contracts.
  • Proven ability to lead digital transformation and implement modern audience development strategies.
  • Deep commitment to anti-racism and social justice.

Physical Requirements: Work is generally performed in an office setting but may require work in various settings to support the organization's objectives. Must be available for frequent travel with overnight stays and long, irregular hours.

Compensation & Benefits: SEIU offers a competitive salary and a comprehensive benefits package that reflects our values as a labor organization and our commitment to the well-being and long-term security of our staff. Benefits include:

  • A comprehensive, employer-sponsored health benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • A defined benefit pension plan
  • Paid time off, including vacation, sick leave, and holidays
  • Additional benefits consistent with a mission-driven workplace

SEIU believes that workers deserve dignity, stability, and the ability to plan for their futures, and our benefits are designed to support that belief.
