Job Summary

The Accountant plays a key role in ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of GoochlandCares' financial information. Reporting to the Finance Manager and working closely with the Chief Financial Officer, this position is responsible for performing professional accounting functions, coordinating the monthly financial close, preparing financial reports and analyses, and maintaining the organization's accounting systems and financial data.

This position serves as the organization's primary day-to-day technical accounting resource and is responsible for reviewing financial transactions for appropriate accounting treatment, documentation, and compliance with organizational policies. The Accountant works directly with other members of the Finance & Operations team to ensure the organization's financial records are accurate, complete, and timely.

The ideal candidate is highly analytical, detail-oriented, and technology-focused, with a passion for leveraging accounting systems and financial data to improve organizational decision-making and operational efficiency.

Essential Job Functions

Accounting & Financial Management

  • Serve as the primary steward of the organization's financial data by ensuring transactions are complete, accurately classified, properly supported, and reconciled across all financial systems.
  • Coordinate and execute the monthly, quarterly and year-end financial close process in collaboration with the Chief Financial Officer and Finance Manager.
  • Prepare recurring and non-recurring journal entries and supporting documentation.
  • Perform reconciliations of bank accounts, investment accounts, balance sheet accounts, and other general ledger accounts.
  • Maintain the organization's fixed asset records and depreciation schedules.
  • Ensure the accuracy, completeness, and integrity of the general ledger.
  • Research and resolve accounting discrepancies and unusual transactions.
  • Record and reconcile deposits within the accounting system, ensuring all deposits are accurately matched to supporting donor, client, grant, or program activity.
  • Coordinate with the Development Department to reconcile donor contributions, online giving platforms, and fundraising activity to the general ledger.
  • Assist with grant accounting, restricted fund tracking, and financial reporting.
  • Prepare audit schedules, workpapers, and supporting documentation for the annual financial statement audit.
  • Monitor financial activity and identify trends, variances, or unusual transactions requiring management attention.
  • Assist with annual budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis.
  • Serve as backup for key finance functions during absences or peak workload periods.

Financial Operations & Internal Controls

  • Review invoices, expense reimbursements, and other financial transactions for appropriate documentation, account coding, grant restrictions, budget availability, and compliance with organizational policies.
  • Recommend corrections to accounting treatment, coding, or supporting documentation prior to approval.
  • Coordinate with department staff to resolve financial discrepancies and obtain additional information when needed.
  • Ensure financial transactions are accurately recorded and appropriately supported before processing.
  • Assist with maintaining strong internal accounting controls and consistent accounting practices across the organization.
  • Monitor transaction workflow to support timely financial processing and month-end close.

Financial Reporting & Systems

  • Serve as a primary resource for maintaining the accuracy and integrity of the organization's financial data.
  • Develop, prepare, and distribute recurring financial reports, dashboards, and management analyses.
  • Perform ad hoc financial analyses to support organizational decision-making.
  • Assist with administration, optimization, and continuous improvement of QuickBooks Online and other financial systems.
  • Identify opportunities to automate workflows, improve reporting, and enhance operational efficiency through technology.
  • Develop and maintain financial reporting tools, dashboards, and key performance indicators.
  • Assist with documenting accounting processes and maintaining accounting procedures.
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, internal controls, financial reporting, and operational efficiency.
  • Participate in implementation of new financial technologies and system enhancements.
  • Help train and on-board Staff to financial systems.
Requirements:

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting.
  • Strong technical accounting knowledge and analytical skills.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible accounting experience within a nonprofit organization.
  • Experience performing month-end close, account reconciliations, and financial reporting.
  • Experience utilizing QuickBooks Online
  • Experience preparing financial reports and working with large amounts of financial data.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel.
  • Experience developing reports and dashboards using business intelligence (BI), data visualization, or similar reporting tools strongly preferred.
  • High level of comfort utilizing accounting technology and cloud-based financial systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly learn and optimize new software applications.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated integrity and commitment to ethical financial practices, compliance, and internal controls.
  • Strong organizational, project management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment.

Physical Requirements and Environmental Conditions:

  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at times.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting, standing, typing, talking, and lifting.
