ROLE OBJECTIVE: Responsible for the creation and maintenance of DSP IP targeting hardware and/or software platforms (FPGAs, uCs, desktops, etc). This person will be expected to demonstrate senior-level expertise and knowledge of DSP theory, principles, tools, and applications, to exercise independent judgment to deliver results, and to provide coaching and mentoring to other engineers.

GENERAL FUNCTIONS/SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop an environment of continual improvement through the use of Lean tools.

  • Be able to describe the quality policy and goals, your contribution to quality, and the effects of not observing quality and customer requirements.
  • Create and maintain proprietary DSP IP targeting COTS and proprietary platforms used in Bird Products.
  • Identify and conduct R&D related to DSP technologies and solutions related to Bird markets and application domains.
  • Provide leadership to identify, integrate, and model the use of appropriate methods, technologies, languages, tools, and platforms to carry out work effectively and efficiently.
  • Provide leadership and mentoring to promote the adoption within Bird of best practices in the creation of DSP IP, including strategies for modeling and testing, test automation, tools, and design patterns.
  • Collaborate with hardware and software design teams to design and integrate DSP algorithms and functions with Bird hardware and application software to create new products.
  • Communicate concepts, consequences, and tradeoffs to engineering and cross-functional stakeholders (speaking/writing/diagramming).
  • Practice strong engineering ethics (detail, quality, accuracy, communication, honesty, etc.).
  • Work constructively and effectively with teams of varying skills and personalities (collaborative, constructive, and flexible).
  • Maintain technical skills & knowledge to stay abreast of industry best practices, emerging technologies, and methods.

  • REQUIRED SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/COMPETENCIES (Applicant must meet all to be considered):

  • BS/MS or equivalent demonstrated professional expertise in DSP IP design with 10+ years in DSP design & construction.
  • Senior-level experience (3+ years) with primary responsibility for the creation of DSP IP.
  • Demonstrated expertise in DSP principles, processes, methods, languages, and tools.
  • Specific DSP expertise in RF communications and/or radar applications (spectral analysis/synthesis, filtering, modulation, etc).
  • Demonstrated expertise with Matlab/Simulink system modeling tools.
  • Demonstrated expertise with Xilinx or Altera FPGA devices and tools.
  • Familiarity with FPGA verification using Mentor or Aldec toolsets.
  • Familiarity with one or more programming languages (C/C++/C#, Python, etc).
  • Competent use of RF & Digital test equipment (Signal Generators, Logic Analyzers, VNA, Spectrum Analyzer, etc).
  • Understanding of RF protocols and standards, industry applications & instrumentation.
  • Familiarity with the automation of FPGA build procedures using CI tools such as Azure or Jenkins.
  • Experience with DSP/software/hardware integration from design to production.
  • DESIRED SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/COMPETENCIES (Applicants may be considered even if they do not possess any or all of these):

  • Familiar with the use of PCB design software (e.g., Altium).
  • Experience with instrumentation products.
  • Familiarity with RF applications and technologies.
  • Familiarity with Test & measurement/metrology concepts and principles (calibration, uncertainty, etc).
  • Familiarity of ISO 9001. An associate must contribute to and adhere to the process requirements of ISO 9001 that are relevant to Software development.
