Certified Ophthalmic Technician

JOB SUMMARY

The Certified Ophthalmic Technician is either a Certified or Registered Medical Assistant. The Certified Ophthalmic Technician is responsible to assist ophthalmologists by performing various duties appropriate for their licensure level that are essential for patient care and so that patients receive the highest standard of service.

The Medical Assistant - Certified is responsible for assisting physicians, midlevel providers, and other clinical staff in providing medical services to patients with provider delegation within scope of practice. This position assists physicians with back-office duties.

The Medical Assistant-Registered (MA-R) works under the delegation of a licensed practitioner (e.g., RN, APC, MD/DO) to perform duties as directed to assist in providing patient care to assigned patients.

PRINCIPLE FUNCTIONS includes the following, other duties may be assigned:

  • Obtain patient medical history and perform vision screenings.
  • Conduct diagnostic tests such as visual acuity, tonometry, OCT, refractions, and fundus photography.
  • Prepare patients for eye exams and surgical procedures.
  • Assist ophthalmologists during examinations as needed.
  • Administer eye drops and medications as outlined in RCW 18.360.050(i).
  • Maintain equipment and supplies.
  • Educate patients on post-care instructions and follow-up appointments.
  • Document patient records and communicate findings to ophthalmologists.
  • Other Responsibilities
    • Attends and participates in all clinical staff and all staff meetings.
    • Attends and/or completes mandatory in-service education for clinic staff.
    • Remains responsible for identification of personal educational needs.
    • Maintain BLS and RQI standards as put forth by organization.

Medical Assistant – Registered (MA-R):

  • Demonstrate competency and perform only the medical tasks listed on the current Healthcare Practitioner Endorsement under the supervision of a healthcare practitioner as defined in RCW 18.360.010.

JOB KNOWLEDGE & QUALIFICATIONS

Education

MA-C:

  • Highest level of education completed, minimum high school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Graduate of a Medical Assistant Program.

MA-R:

  • HIghest education completed, minimum high school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Graduate of accredited school for medical assistants, or an equivalent combination of coursework, experience/training.

Training and Experience

MA-C & MA-R:

  • A minimum of one (1) year experience as a medical assistant in a clinic setting is required.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Minimum Required MA-C & MA-R:

  • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) by JCAHPO at hire.
  • Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) by JCAHPO within one (1) year from hire date.

MA-C:

  • WA State Medical Assistant Certification required.
  • American Heart Association BLS HCP required.

MA-R:

  • Submission of the Medical Assistant – Registered Healthcare Practitioner Endorsement with the Washington Department of Health within 7 days of the start date.
    • Copy of Healthcare Practitioner Endorsement to Human Resources.
  • Active Washington Medical Assistant Registration within 60 days of hire
    • Copy of written verification the endorsement is accepted and active with the Washington State Department of Health to Human Resources.
  • Completion of all assigned unit/department specific checklists, including applicable CLIA competencies, supervised by a Healthcare Practitioner within 60 days of hire.
    • Copy of all checklists and competencies to Human Resources.
  • American Heart Association BLS HCP required.

MA-C - $27.892 - $42.765

MA-R - $20.265 - $38.692
