POSITION SUMMARY:
In accordance with established policies, procedures, and regulatory standards, the Mammography Technologist II performs screening and diagnostic mammography examinations under the direction of a Radiologist and Facility Manager, following established ACR, FDA, and MQSA guidelines. This role requires advanced technical proficiency in both 2D and 3D mammography imaging and the ability to apply sound judgment in performing radiologic procedures for diagnostic interpretation. The Mammography Technologist II assumes responsibility for assigned imaging areas, supports workflow across multiple locations as needed, and may perform duties related to DEXA, MQSA compliance, or supervisory functions. The technologist ensures high quality imaging, adheres to radiation safety protocols, provides compassionate patient care, and maintains accuracy in documentation and PACS record management. Performs job duties in accordance with the mission, vision and values of CCSF.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Independently performs 2D and 3D mammograms in accordance with ACR, MQSA, and departmental protocols.
- Confirms exam orders, records clinical history, and ensures the procedure performed matches the physician’s request.
- Performs precise positioning techniques and utilizes immobilization devices to obtain optimal diagnostic breast images.
- Sets exposure factors, manipulates equipment to correct positioning, and ensures proper machine functionality.
- Reviews digital images for clarity, positioning, and completeness, repeating images if needed to meet radiologist expectations.
- Applies radiation protection measures, adheres to regulatory standards, and participates in QC tasks as required.
- Verifies correct exam coding, updates billing titles, and ensures prior studies are available for radiologist comparison.
- Educates patients, answers questions, and ensures emotional comfort during sensitive breast imaging procedures.
- Completes required QC checks, maintains documentation, and reports equipment malfunctions promptly.
- Assists with team training, supplies, cross coverage, maintains exam rooms, and performs additional responsibilities such as DEXA or MQSA support when assigned.
- Maintains accurate documentation in the EMR/RIS/PACS systems.
REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum 1 year of mammography experience required
- Associate’s Degree in Radiologic Technology (minimum requirement)
- Graduate of an accredited radiography program
REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSE OR REGISTRATION:
- Florida Radiologic Technologist License
- ARRT Registered (Radiography) – required
- ARRT Mammography Certification – required
- BLS Certification (American Heart Association) – required
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS OR ABILITIES:
- Expertise in performing screening and diagnostic mammograms, applying ACR, FDA, and MQSA guidelines, and using both 2D and 3D imaging technologies.
- Ability to adjust imaging techniques based on breast density, implants, or patient limitations to obtain diagnostic-quality images.
- Understanding of radiation protection principles, mammography specific safety standards, and requirements for quality assurance and equipment performance
- Proficiency in handling mammography units, assessing image quality, adjusting exposure factors, and using PACS and digital imaging software.
- Ability to reduce patient anxiety, communicate procedural expectations clearly, and demonstrate sensitivity in a high stress and intimate imaging environment.
- Capable of floating between sites, completing QC tasks, supporting workflow efficiency, and resolving basic equipment or technical issues.
