POSITION SUMMARY:
In accordance with established policies, procedures, and regulatory standards, the Mammography Technologist III performs screening and diagnostic mammography procedures under the direction of a Radiologist and Facility Manager, following ACR, FDA, and MQSA standards. This level requires expert technical proficiency in 2D and 3D mammography imaging and specialized capability in stereotactic guided breast biopsy procedures. Mammographers in this role assume increased responsibility for designated imaging areas, support radiologists during interventional procedures, and ensure the highest quality imaging for diagnostic accuracy. Mammography Specialists at this level also train new technologists, provide ongoing competency refreshers in positioning, and uphold quality and compliance standards. The Mammography Technologist III demonstrates advanced patient care skills, sound judgment, and the ability to work independently while supporting the overall efficiency and clinical excellence of the mammography department. Performs job duties in accordance with the mission, vision and values of CCSF.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Independently executes 2D and 3D mammograms with advanced positioning techniques to ensure high quality diagnostic images.
- Operates stereotactic equipment, positions patients for biopsy procedures, and provides direct support to the radiologist.
- Provides instruction on positioning, workflow, and mammography best practices; offers recurring refreshers as needed.
- Confirms exam indications, documents patient symptoms, and ensures procedures align with physician orders.
- Utilizes advanced positioning techniques and immobilization devices to obtain optimal breast tissue visualization.
- Sets exposure factors, positions equipment accurately, and ensures proper functioning of mammography units and biopsy devices.
- Applies radiation protection measures and adheres to ACR, FDA, and MQSA requirements for safe imaging practices.
- Evaluates digital images for completeness, positioning accuracy, and clarity; repeats images when necessary.
- Ensures correct exam titles, updates billing information, and presents prior and current studies to radiologists for comparison.
- Performs routine equipment QC, reports malfunctions, stocks and orders supplies, and maintains clean, well organized exam rooms.
- Maintains accurate documentation in the EMR/RIS/PACS systems.
REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum of 2 years of mammography experience inclusive of stereotactic guided biopsy required
- Associate’s Degree in Radiologic Technology (minimum requirement)
- Graduate of an accredited radiography program
REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSE OR REGISTRATION:
- Florida Radiologic Technologist License
- ARRT Registered (Radiography) – required
- ARRT Mammography Certification – required
- BLS Certification (American Heart Association) – required
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS OR ABILITIES:
- Expertise in performing complex mammography exams and performing stereotactic guided breast biopsies following clinical protocols.
- Ability to modify techniques for dense breasts, implants, or post surgical anatomy to ensure optimal diagnostic value.
- Proficiency in ACR, FDA, and MQSA guidelines, including equipment requirements, quality assurance, and record keeping.
- Ability to perform advanced positioning, adjust exposure factors, troubleshoot equipment, and ensure diagnostic quality imaging.
- Skilled in educating patients, supporting radiologists, and training new or developing technologists on positioning and technique.
- Ability to remain calm during interventional procedures, manage complex patient cases, and consistently provide compassionate, culturally sensitive care.
