POSITION SUMMARY:
In accordance with established policies, procedures, and regulatory standards, the MRI Technologist III is an advanced level technologist responsible for performing highly specialized Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) procedures that produce high quality diagnostic images. This position may serve as an MRI Float Technologist, Cardiac MRI Technologist, or Breast Biopsy MRI Technologist. The role requires expert level MRI technical skills, strong clinical judgment, and the ability to work independently across a wide range of complex imaging scenarios and patient populations. The MRI Technologist III supports radiologists during specialized procedures, assists with workflow coordination, performs equipment quality control, ensures adherence to MRI safety protocols, and may guide or support less experienced technologists. The role plays a key part in ensuring exemplary patient care, operational efficiency, and clinical quality across assigned locations. Performs job duties in accordance with the mission, vision and values of CCSF.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Executes advanced procedures such as cardiac MRI, breast MRI/biopsy, or specialty protocols requiring expert technical knowledge.
- Ensures exam orders accurately match patient needs, documents all relevant symptoms, and collaborates with radiologists on appropriate protocols.
- Clearly explains complex procedures, reduces patient anxiety, and ensures safety and comfort throughout imaging.
- Performs in depth screening for implants, devices, and contraindications; monitors SAR levels; and mitigates safety risks.
- Positions patients using advanced techniques and assists radiologists during MRI guided procedures, including breast biopsies.
- Selects, modifies, and optimizes MRI sequences, especially when floating between locations with varying equipment.
- Reviews images for technical precision, ensures diagnostic completeness, and repeats sequences when required.
- Establishes IV access, administers contrast agents, monitors for adverse reactions, and documents per protocol.
- Performs routine QC, identifies equipment malfunctions, troubleshoots issues, and escalates concerns to leadership as needed.
- Document accurately in the EMR/RIS/PACS: patient assessments, imaging details, contrast usage, dose indices, and procedural notes.
- Assists in training staff, supports operational efficiency, maintains supply levels, collaborates with leadership, and performs additional duties as assigned.
REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum of 4 years of imaging experience (MRI -focused required)
- Associate’s Degree in Radiologic Technology (minimum requirement)
- Graduate of an accredited radiography program
REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSE OR REGISTRATION:
- Florida Radiologic Technologist License required
- ARRT MRI Certification – required
- BLS Certification (American Heart Association) – required
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS OR ABILITIES:
- Comprehensive understanding of specialized MRI procedures such as cardiac imaging, breast imaging/biopsy, and multi facility workflow operations.
- Ability to anticipate imaging needs, modify protocols, and ensure accurate visualization of complex anatomical regions.
- Deep knowledge of MRI safety zones, emergency procedures, SAR regulation, and ability to identify and respond to high risk safety concerns.
- Ability to operate, troubleshoot, and adapt to multiple MRI platforms and coils across various locations.
- Proficiency in assisting radiologists during MRI guided breast biopsies or performing cardiac MRI sequences requiring precision timing and advanced sequencing.
- Ability to coordinate workflow, mentor junior technologists, communicate with multidisciplinary teams, and maintain smooth operations across sites.
