Responsibilities

Build the Foundation for Complex Data Center Projects

Join Shawmut's Mission Critical team and help shape complex data center projects before construction begins. As an Assistant Preconstruction Manager, you will manage assigned trade packages across multiple pursuits, partner with Preconstruction and Operations leaders, and contribute to the budgets, scopes, bid strategies, and client deliverables that set each project up for success.

This is a hands-on opportunity to deepen your technical and estimating expertise across major building systems. You will take ownership of meaningful work from day one while building the experience needed to progress toward broader preconstruction and project ownership responsibilities.

Manage Trade Packages and Bidding

• Manage assigned trade packages across multiple concurrent projects, typically overseeing five to seven active scopes at a time.

• Lead subcontractor outreach, invitation management, bid follow-up, and competitive participation tracking.

• Develop clear scopes of work and bid instructions so subcontractors price work consistently.

• Review subcontractor proposals and level bids to identify clarifications, exclusions, gaps, and potential risk.

• Prepare bid comparisons and recommendations for review by project leadership.

• Build strong, productive relationships with subcontractor partners.

Support Estimates and Procurement

• Support conceptual budgets, milestone estimates, and guaranteed maximum price proposals.

• Perform quantity takeoffs and validate estimates to support budget development and subcontractor bid verification.

• Identify value engineering opportunities, cost-saving alternatives, procurement risks, and key cost drivers within assigned scopes.

• Support procurement schedules, package strategies, and buyout recommendations.

• Complete detailed variance reporting and provide practical value engineering recommendations.

Partner Across the Project Lifecycle

• Contribute technical input and cost data to client presentations, estimate reviews, and proposals.

• Partner with Preconstruction and Operations to keep project information accurate, organized, and ready for decisions.

• Organize estimate backup, scope summaries, and trade package documentation for project turnover.

• Uphold Shawmut's quality standards in your work with internal teams and subcontractor partners.

Build Technical Expertise

• Develop a detailed understanding of assigned systems, including scope requirements, market conditions, procurement strategies, and cost drivers.

• Rotate through major building systems to build broad technical and estimating knowledge.

• Continue developing toward increased scope responsibility and full project ownership.

• Mission Critical or data center experience is a plus.

• Working knowledge of construction principles, practices, procedures, means, and methods.

• The ability to manage competing priorities and support several active projects at once.

• Clear written and verbal communication skills in English, with strong follow-through and attention to detail.

• Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, along with the ability to learn new software and applications.

• Curiosity about major building systems and a desire to grow into broader project ownership.
